C'est un conservateur utilisé comme additif alimentaire ainsi que dans les produits cosmétiques et d'hygiène. Puissant antioxydant synthétique issu de la carbochimie, son utilisation est controversée et il semble que trop peu d'études aient été menées à son sujet.
