BARDAC 22

CAS: 7173-51-5

Didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) is used for various purposes, such as a fungicide for coolants, an antiseptic for wood, and disinfectant for cleaning. Disinfectants are the chemical agents that either inhibit microbial activities and growth or are lethal and kill the microorganisms. In man’s struggle to control the microbes responsible for disease and illness many organic and inorganic chemicals have been found to be toxic to microorganisms.

BARDAC 22 is an effective cationic surfactant that can be used in a variety of cleaning systems. Also it is a quaternary ammonium based antimicrobial used as a bacteriostat, deodorant, disinfectant and(or) a microbiocide.
Didecyldimethylammonium chloride (DDAC) is an antiseptic/disinfectant that is used in many biocidal applications. It causes disruption of intermolecular interactions and dissociation of lipid bilayers. It is a broad spectrum bactericidal and fungicidal and can be used as disinfectant cleaner for linen, recommended for use in hospitals, hotels and industries. It is also used in gynaecology, surgery, ophthalmology, pediatrics, OT, and for the sterilization of surgical instruments, endoscopes and surface disinfection.

Didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride is a clear, yellow liquid, yellowish powder or colorless crystals. It has a mushroom-like odor. It is moderately soluble in water. USE: Didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride is used as an antimicrobial. Applications include commercial and residential where it is used on walls, floors, tables, toilets and fixtures. Solutions are introduced into humidifiers, ultrasonic tanks, reverse osmosis units, cooling systems and water storage tanks. It is used to disinfectant egg shells, milking equipment and udders, agricultural tools and vehicles. It is used as a sanitizer for swimming pools, and decorative ponds and fountains. It is a wood preservative. Didecyl dimethyl ammonium chloride is registered for these antimicrobial uses by the U.S. EPA Office of Pesticide Programs.

Sewer and Wastewater Treatment

Disinfectants used to treat sewage and wastewater include chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ozone, sulfur dioxide, hydrogen peroxide, and 1,3-dichloro-5,5-dimethylhydantoin. Products of decay include hydrogen sulfide, methane, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and ammonia. Faulty equipment can generate dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

Applying Wood Preservatives

Railroad ties, marine pilings, fence posts, and telephone poles may be pressure treated with creosote, pentachlorophenol, and ammoniacal copper arsenate (ACA) or chromated copper arsenate (CCA). [ILO Encyclo: Major Sectors and Processes: Occupational Hazards and Controls] Pentachlorophenol, creosote, and chromated copper arsenate were banned for sale in the United States to consumers as wood preservatives. CCA is still used commercially as a wood preservative.

Using Disinfectants or Biocides

Disinfectants are chemicals used to inhibit or kill microorganisms. Disinfectants are also called antiseptics or biocides. Disinfectants are generally used in physical media (solutions or on surfaces) while antiseptics are applied to skin or other living tissue. Some of these agents are also used as preservatives for food, drugs, and other domestic and industrial products. Many of these chemicals are skin and respiratory sensitizers. The following can cause occupational asthma: glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde, sodium bisulfite, chloramine T, hexachlorophene, chlorohexidine, benzalkonium chloride, isononanoyl oxybenzene sulfonate, lauryl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, and isothiazolinones. A study of 175 workers exposed to chloramines, aldehydes, and quaternary ammonium disinfectants in the food industry showed increased acute irritation symptoms but not chronic respiratory symptoms.
