Benzisothiazolinone is a preservative, but it is also a disinfectant used in the film, fiber, leather, masonry, metalworking, and embalming industries. 
However, benzisothiazolinone is also found in liquid hand soap and sunscreen.
Benzisothiazolinone dissolves in water and is used in water-based solutions, such as pastes, paints, and oils.


There are three common methods for making BIT. 
The first involves reacting 2-halogenothiobenzoyl halide with a primary amine to obtain an N-substituted BIT. 
The 2-halogenothiobenzoyl halide is typically made by cleaving the disulphide bond of 2,2'-dithio-bis-benzoic acid with halogen and simultaneously or sequentially converting the carboxylic acid groups to acid halides. 
A second method involves cyclising 2-halogenothiobenzamide in the presence of acid or alkali. 
The 2-halogenothiobenzamide typically comes from converting 2,2'-dithio-bis- benzoic acid to bisamide and then cleaving the disulphide bond with halogen. 
The third method is to heat 2,2'-dithio-bis-benzamides in the presence of a sodium hydroxide solution. 
Another method is to disproportion bisamide in alkali in the presence of oxygen or an oxygen-release agent.

BIT is widely used as a preservative and antimicrobial.


Benzo[d]isothiazol-3-one is an organic heterobicyclic compound based on a fused 1,2-thiazole and benzene bicyclic ring skeleton, with the S atom positioned adjacent to one of the positions of ring fusion. 
Benzisothiazolinone has a role as a disinfectant, a platelet aggregation inhibitor, an environmental contaminant, a xenobiotic, a drug allergen and a sensitiser. 
Benzisothiazolinone is an organonitrogen heterocyclic compound and an organic heterobicyclic compound.


1,2-Benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one can be synthesized by reacting 2-mercaptobenzoic acid with diphenyl phosphoryl azide.

1,2-benzisothiazol-3(2H)-one (referred to as benzisothiazolinone or BIT), is an antimicrobial agent used as a preservative in mainly aqueous-based chemical chemicals. 
BIT can be found in paints, lacquers, polishes, printing inks, emulsions, cleaning agents, disposable gloves; it is also widely used as a preservative for pesticides.
Due to environmental considerations, water-based paints recently replaced solvent-based paints, which require the addition of biocides; isothiazolinones are widely used for this purpose.
BIT is also used in paper-based jointing but it degrades during sunlight exposure losing its biocidal efficiency.

In paints, benzisothiazolinone is commonly used alone or as a mixture with methylisothiazolinone. 
Typical concentrations in products are 200–400 ppm depending on the application area and the combination with other biocides. 
According to a study in Switzerland, 19% of the paints, varnishes and coatings contained BIT in 2000. 
The fraction in adhesives, sealants, plasters and fillers was shown at that time as 25%.
A later study in 2014 shows a dramatic rise in usage, to 95.8% of house paints.

Home cleaning and other care products that are high in water are easily contaminated by microorganisms, so isothiazolinones are often used as a preservatives in these products because they are good at combatting a broad array of bacteria, fungi, and yeasts.

A Swiss investigation found that BIT is used in concentrations between 50 and 500 ppm in tattooing ink.
According to regulations in the EU and Switzerland, BIT cannot be used in cosmetics. 
However, it is allowed in the United States and Canada.

Benzisothiazolinone has reported cosmetic uses as an antimicrobial agent, a preservative, and in fragrance compounds. 
Benzisothiazolinone has been reported to be present in tattoo inks.
Benzisothiazolinone (CAS No. 2634-33-5) has reported domestic uses, including as preservatives in paints, lacquers and varnishes,
and as ingredients in:

-adhesive and binding agents;
-air fresheners;
-fabric softeners;
-carpet cleaners;
-stain removers;
-multi-purpose cleaners;
-wood floor cleaners;
-glass surface cleaners;
-floor polishers;
-tile grout and tile sealer;
-laundry and dishwashing detergents;
-dish soaps;
-handwash products; and
-odour eliminators.
