Production

Despite the trivial name, betaine (trimethylglycine) is not used in production. In addition to the main substance, the final mixture may contain up to 3% glycerin. Sodium benzoate can be added to the product as a preservative.

Properties

A mild amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut oil. Easily soluble in water over a wide pH range. The pH value of a 10% aqueous solution is in the range of 5–6.

Main areas and methods of application

Serves as a foaming agent, viscosity modifier, emulsifier. As a surfactant, it is mainly used in personal care products as it gently cleanses the skin and hair. In addition, its pH range promotes a mild bactericidal effect, which also makes it an effective yet gentle personal cleanser. It reduces the potential for irritation caused by other cleaning ingredients found in detergents. In addition, it creates a greasy layer on the hair that gets rid of static charges and softens the hair. Possesses good foaming and moisturizing properties; compatible with all types of surfactants (anionic, neionic and cationic).

It is included in the formulations of shampoos, shower gels, household detergents, conditioners, liquid soaps, bath foams, scrubs.
