CALCIUM HYDROGEN SULFITE

EC / List no.: 237-423-7
CAS no.: 13780-03-5

Calcium hydrogen sulfite is an inorganic compound which is the salt of a calcium cation and a bisulfite anion.
Calcium hydrogen sulfite may be prepared by treating lime with an excess of sulfur dioxide and water.
As a food additive Calcium hydrogen sulfite is used as a preservative under the E number E227. calcium hydrogen sulfite is an acid salt and behaves like an acid in aqueous solution.
Calcium hydrogen sulfite is used in the sulfite process for producing paper from wood chips.

Description
Now more commonly known as calcium hydrogen sulfite, Ca(HS03)2 is a compound known only in solution.
The colorless aqueous solution smells like sulfur dioxide and is made by dissolving calcium sulfite in aqueous S02 solution, or by passing S02 through calcium hydroxide suspensions.
Used in large amounts to make cellulose by the sulfite process, it is also used to disinfect barns, as an antiseptic in medicine, and as a preservative.

Chemical Properties
solution of calcium sulfite in an aqueous solution of sulfur dioxide; yellowish liquid; used in bleaching textiles [HAW93]

Uses:
As germicide, preservative, and disinfectant; for washing (1:1000) casks in brewing to prevent souring and cloudiness of beer and to prevent secondary fermentation; as antichlor in bleaching fabrics; largely in manufacture of sulfite cellulose from wood for paper-making.

Calcium hydrogen sulfite, solution appears as a colorless to yellow aqueous solution with an odor of sulfur dioxide.
Corrosive to metals.

The hydrogen sulfite, Ca(HSO3)2, is made by the action of sulfur dioxide on a slurry of Ca(OH)2.
Its aqueous solution under pressure dissolves the lignin in wood to leave cellulose fibres and thus finds considerable application in the paper industry.
Calcium hydrogen sulfite is a yellowish liquid with an odor of sulfur dioxide.
Calcium hydrogen sulfite is also known as Calcium hydrogen sulfite.
Calcium hydrogen sulfite is produced from sulfurous acid and limestone.
There are two grades of calcium hydrogen sulfite: food grade and technical grade.
These grades of calcium hydrogen sulfite find application in food & beverage, textile, pulp & paper, water treatment, and other industries.
Food-grade calcium hydrogen sulfite is used as a preservative in beer, canned fruits & vegetables, juices, jams, and pickles, among others.
In the food industry, calcium hydrogen sulfite act as preservative as it decreases the level of oxygen in the packaged food, thereby increasing its shelf life of the product.

The industrial-grade product is used in textile, pulp & paper, and water treatment industries.
Calcium hydrogen sulfite is used as a disinfectant in water treatment, where it neutralizes chlorine.
Similarly, industrial-grade product is also used as a bleaching agent in textile and pulp & paper industries.
In the pulp & paper industry, calcium hydrogen sulfite is added to digester along with wood pulp to dissolve cellulosic pulp constituents, lignin for subsequent use in production of paper.
However, calcium hydrogen sulfite is banned in Australia as a food preservative due to its negative impact on health of individuals.

Calcium hydrogen sulfite is the other name for this salt of a calcium cation and a bisulfite anion.
Chemical formula is: Ca(HSO3)2.

This sulfite was patented to use in wood pulp industry in the US in 1867.

Not permitted as a preservative in Australia and New Zealand, but still used in other parts of the world.

Prevents secondary fermentation in brewing and is used in washing beer casks to prevent the beer becoming cloudy or sour.

Also used as a firming agent in canned fruits and vegetables.

Food uses of calcium hydrogen sulfite:

Beer
Canned fruits
Canned vegetables
Jams, jellies

A yellow liquid with a strong Sulfur dioxide odor.
Calcium hydrogen sulfite is only known in solution.
Calcium hydrogen sulfite is prepared by saturating Calcium carbonate with Sulfurous acid or by bubbling sulfur dioxide through a Calcium hydroxide solution.
Calcium hydrogen sulfite is used in the manufacturing of paper pulp to dissolve Lignin and as a Scavenger for chlorine.
Calcium hydrogen sulfite is also used as a bleach, Preservative, and Disinfectant.
