Carbowax Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) 6000 by Dow is PEG-150-based plasticizer and mold release agent.

Applications of Carbowax PEG 6000
Carbowax PEG 6000 has been used in many different applications. 
A single-step method is described for the activation of PEG for binding to polypeptides and proteins.
Carbowax PEG 6000 has been used in the precipitation of proteins.
Carbowax PEG 6000 is also used as a fusogen to obtain hybridomas for monoclonal antibody production (Induces cell hybridization).

FUNCTION of Carbowax PEG 6000
Carbowax PEG 6000 provides multiple benefits in the tableting process as binders, and provide internal and external lubrication. 
Also functiona as plasticizers for tablet coatings, and are found in spray-on medications and sustained-release devices. 
Carbowax PEG 6000 is a food additive as well.

Biological description of Carbowax PEG 6000
Synthetic, hydrophilic, biocompatible polymer with widespread use in biomedical and other applications. 
Maintains the ability to aid the spinal cord injury recovery process, helping the nerve impulse conduction process in animals. 
Aids the repair of severed sciatic axons in rats. 
Helps with nerve damage recovery. 
Lubricant. 
Used in the preparation of vesicle transport systems for diagnostic procedures or drug delivery methods.

Carbowax PEG 6000 is white granular. 
Soluble in water, soluble in some organic solvents. 
The solution has high viscosity at low concentration, and can be processed by calendering, extrusion, casting, etc. 
Carbowax PEG 6000 is a thermoplastic resin with good compatibility with other resins. 
Resistant to bacterial erosion, moisture absorption in the atmosphere is weak.

Carbowax PEG 6000 resins are high molecular weight homopolymers of ethylene oxide via heterogeneously catalyzed ring-opening polymerization. 
Usually can be divided into the relative molecular mass of 2 × 1 04 above and tens of thousands of above, the former is called polyethylene glycol, the latter is called polyethylene oxide. Carbowax PEG 6000 with flocculation, thickening, slow release, lubrication, dispersion, retention, water retention and other properties, suitable for medicine, fertilizer, paper, ceramics, detergents, cosmetics, heat treatment, water treatment, fire, oil exploitation and other industries, the product is non-toxic and non-irritating, and will not remain, deposit or breed volatile matter in the process of product generation. 
As a papermaking additive, the retention rate of the filler and the fine fiber can be improved, and the dispersant is particularly suitable for the long fiber, and the beating time can be shortened.

Carbowax PEG 6000's below 700 molecular weight occur as clear to slightly hazy, colourless, slightly hygroscopic liquids with a slight characteristic odour.
Carbowax PEG 6000's between 700-900 are semi-solid. 
Carbowax PEG 6000's over 1000 molecular weight are creamy white waxy solids, flakes, or free-flowing powders. 
Carbowax PEG 6000 is the essential ingredient needed in preparing the alcoholic fixative now commonly used in cancer cytology. 
A new method is described showing how carbowax PEG 1450 sticks of uniform weight and length can be manufactured in thin polyethylene molds. 

The mold which is easily cut thru with a razor blade is left on to protect the wax stick until it is used. 
From these sticks any desired smaller weight of carbowax Carbowax PEG 6000 can be calculated from markings stamped on the mold surface, from measurements on an English or metric straight ruler, or from an algebraic line graph or conversion table supplied with the molded stick. 
The vertical axis of the graph can be used for making measurements in either centimeters or inches. 
Thus Carbowax PEG 6000 is no longer necessary to weigh out the small quantity of carbowax PEG 1450 needed to prepare the usual small volume of fixative needed for every day office or clinic use.

Carbowax PEG 6000 is frequently used to preserve waterlogged wood and other organic artifacts that have been salvaged from underwater archaeological contexts, as was the case with the warship Vasa in Stockholm, and similar cases. 
Carbowax PEG 6000 replaces water in wooden objects, making the wood dimensionally stable and preventing warping or shrinking of the wood when it dries.
Carbowax PEG 6000 is also used as a fusogen to obtain hybridomas for monoclonal antibody production (Induces cell hybridization). 
Carbowax PEG 6000 is suitable for applications in the molecular biology, special if high purity is required. 

Carbowax PEG 6000 is also used as a polymer host for solid polymer electrolytes. 
Although not yet in commercial production, many groups around the globe are engaged in research on solid polymer electrolytes involving PEG, with the aim of improving their properties, and in permitting their use in batteries, electro-chromic display systems, and other products in the future.
Carbowax PEG 6000 is injected into industrial processes to reduce foaming in separation equipment.
Carbowax PEG 6000 is used as a binder in the preparation of technical ceramics.
Carbowax PEG 6000 was used as an additive to silver halide photographic emulsions.

First Aid of Carbowax PEG 6000

EYES: 
First check the victim for contact lenses and remove if present. 
Flush victim's eyes with water or normal saline solution for 20 to 30 minutes while simultaneously calling a hospital or poison control center. 
Do not put any ointments, oils, or medication in the victim's eyes without specific instructions from a physician. 
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim after flushing eyes to a hospital even if no symptoms (such as redness or irritation) develop.

SKIN: 
IMMEDIATELY flood affected skin with water while removing and isolating all contaminated clothing. 
Gently wash all affected skin areas thoroughly with soap and water. 
If symptoms such as redness or irritation develop, IMMEDIATELY call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital for treatment.

INHALATION: 
IMMEDIATELY leave the contaminated area; take deep breaths of fresh air. 
If symptoms (such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, or burning in the mouth, throat, or chest) develop, call a physician and be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital. Provide proper respiratory protection to rescuers entering an unknown atmosphere. 
Whenever possible, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) should be used; if not available, use a level of protection greater than or equal to that advised under Protective Clothing.

INGESTION:
DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. 
If the victim is conscious and not convulsing, give 1 or 2 glasses of water to dilute the chemical and IMMEDIATELY call a hospital or poison control center. 
Be prepared to transport the victim to a hospital if advised by a physician. 
If the victim is convulsing or unconscious, do not give anything by mouth, ensure that the victim's airway is open and lay the victim on his/her side with the head lower than the body. 
DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. 
IMMEDIATELY transport the victim to a hospital.
