Emulsogen EL 400 is a polyethylene glycol derivative of hydrogenated castor oil where the average PEG chain length is 35. 
Emulsogen EL 400  is a nonionic surfactant used as an emulsifying and solubilising agent in pharmaceutical preparations and cosmetics.

According to the characteristics of the hydrophilic base of the emulsifier, it can be divided into:
(1) Anionic emulsifier. 
Emulsogen EL 400 of emulsifier ionizes in water to generate anionic hydrophilic groups, such as fatty acid soap, alkyl sulfate (sodium dodecyl sulfate), alkylbenzene sulfonate (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate), Phosphate etc. 
Anionic emulsifiers are required to be used under alkaline or neutral conditions and cannot be used under acidic conditions. 
Emulsogen EL 400 can also be used in conjunction with other anionic emulsifiers or non-ionic emulsifiers, but not with cationic emulsifiers.
(2) Cationic emulsifier. 
Emulsogen EL 400 of emulsifier ionizes in water to generate cationic hydrophilic groups, such as N-dodecyldimethylamine and other amine derivatives, quaternary ammonium salts, and the like. Cationic emulsifiers should be used under acidic conditions, and must not be used together with anionic emulsifiers. 
(3) Non-ionic emulsifier. 
Emulsogen EL 400 does not ionize in water. 
The hydrophilic group is a variety of polar groups, such as polyoxyethylene ether, polyoxypropylene ether, block copolymers of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide, polyol fatty acid esters, polyvinyl alcohol and the like.


Emulsogen EL 400 products are standard NPE-free emulsifiers in various EC formulations.
