Silquest A-187  silane are epoxy functional  silanes  which may be suitable  for use as adhesion  promoters in SPUR + , urethane, epoxy, polysulfide, silicone, and  acrylic caulks, coatings, sealants and adhesives.

SPUR+ perpolymer applications benefit from adhesion without decrease  in elongation and yellowing. Urethane  applications  benefit from  enhanced adhesion  to glass and  metal  substrates, while providing improved shelf stability over  amino silane alternatives. 
Typical use level ranges from  0.5 to 1.5  pbw. 
Epoxy  applications benefiting  from the  use of Silquest  A-186 silane or Silquest A-187 silane include quartz filled epoxy encapsulants,  pre-mix formulations,  sand-filled epoxy concrete patching  materials, and  metal  filled  epoxy materials  suitable for  mold die tools. 
Epoxy encapsulation systems benefit from Momentive  Performance  Materials epoxy family  of Silquest silanes' ability to enhance wet adhesion, reducing the risk of semiconductor or  integrated  circuit  failure due  to water ingress or surface corrosion. 
Typical use level is 1.0 pbw. Polysulfide  applications  benefit from  enhanced adhesion performance, without suffering  odor issues  associated with mercapto  based  silanes. 
Typical use  level ranges from 0.5  to 1.5 pbw. 
Latex caulk applications benefit from enhanced adhesion to glass and metal substrates, without suffering yellowing issues associated with  amino silane adhesion promoters. 
Typical  use level ranges from 0.2  to 0.5 pbw.


Solubility
Silquest A-186  silane  and Silquest A-187  silane are soluble in water after  hydrolysis, alcohol, acetone and most  aliphatic esters at normal application levels under five percent. 
Hydrolysis releases methanol.

An epoxy functional silane, Silquest A-187 silane is specially formulated for use as an adhesion promoter in SPUR + * prepolymer, urethane, epoxy, polysulfide, silicone and acrylic systems for caulks, coatings, sealants and adhesives. 
Its epoxy functionality allows Silquest A-187 silane to perform as a durable epoxy ring that is reactive with many organic functions. 
Silquest A-187 also offers non-yellowing adhesion in many resin systems and has proven to increase the flexibility of systems when compared to other adhesion promoters under certain conditions.

Working as a trimethoxy silane, Silquest A-187 silane bonds to inorganic substrates to provide excellent wet and dry adhesion along with a rapid hydrolysis rate. 
Silquest A-187 silane also demonstrates enhanced electrical properties in epoxy-based encapsulants and packaging materials, the result of improved bonding between resin and substrate or filler. 
Formulated to enhance wet adhesion, Silquest A-187 silane also benefits epoxy encapsulation systems through its enhanced safety of semiconductor or integrated circuits, which it guards from water ingress or surface corrosion.  

This silane is also an excellent candidate for waterborne applications, including acrylic and vinyl-acrylic caulks, as well as urethane and latex caulk applications, where it can improve adhesion to glass and metal substrates.  

Other epoxy applications that may benefit from the addition of Silquest A-187 silane include quartz-filled epoxy encapsulants, pre-mix formulations and sand-filled epoxy concrete patching materials, along with metal-filled epoxy, like those used in mold and dye tools.

Silquest A-187 is the first widely used coupling agent and has been used for 40 years. 
One end of its structure with reactive groups such as amino and vinyl, can react with epoxy, phenolic, polyester and other synthetic resin molecules. 
The other end is alkoxy (such as methoxy, ethoxy etc.) or chlorine atoms which is connected with silicon. 
These groups can be transformed into silanol in the hydrolysis in water solution or damp air. 
And the formed silanol is able to react with surface hydroxyl of glass, minerals and inorganic filler.
Therefore, silane coupling agent is commonly used in silicate-filled epoxy, phenolic, polyester resin and other systems. 
In addition, it can also be used for FRP production, in order to improve its mechanical strength and resistance to wet environment. 
The organic groups of the silane coupling agent are selective about the reaction of the synthetic resin.
Generally, these organic groups lack sufficient reactivity with synthetic resins such as polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene, and thus the coupling effect for them is poor. 
In recent years, new varieties of silane coupling agents with better coupling for polyolefins have been developed, but are limited in cost and other properties and are not yet widely used.
Silane coupling agent is also known as silane treatment agent. 
Its general formula is Y (CH2) nSiX3. Wherein n is an integer of 0 to 3; X is a hydrolyzable group such as chlorine, methoxy, ethoxy and acetoxy; Y is an organic functional group such as a vinyl, an amino, an epoxy group, a methacryloyloxy group and sulfydryl.

Uses:

Silquest A-187 is an epoxy-functional silane, it is a clear, light straw liquid. 
Silquest A-187 may be used as a coupling agent in polysulfide and polyurethane caulks and sealants, in mineral-filled or glass-reinforced thermosets and thermoplastics, and in glass roving size-binders. 
Silquest A-187 is particularly employed as an adhesion-promoting additive in waterborne systems, e.g. improving the adhesion of acrylic latex sealants.

Application areas:
Silquest A-187 is mainly used in unsaturated polyester composites to improve the mechanical properties, electrical properties and light transmission properties of the composites, especially to improve their performance in wet environment.
In wire and cable industry, when used to treat EPDM system stuffed by pottery clay and crosslinked by peroxide, it can improve consumption factor and specific inductance captance.
Used for its copolymerization with monomers like vinyl acetate and acrylic acid or methacrylic, to form the polymers widely used in coatings, adhesives and sealants, providing excellent adhesion and durability.
