TARTARIC ACID L (+)
DESCRIPTION
Synonyms:  Tartaric acid, 2,3 - dihydroxybutanedioic acid, dioxysuccinic acid, Dibasic hydroxyacid, Set retarder.

The salts and anions of tartaric acid are called tartrates. 

Chemical formula:  HOOS-CH (OH) -CH (OH) -COOH

Of the three known stereoisomers (D - (-) - enantiomer, meso-form (meso-tartaric acid) and L - (+) - enantiomer, we will talk further only about the L - (+) - enantiomer.

Tartaric acid is odorless and colorless transparent crystals, very sour in taste.

Tartaric acid L (+) is an odorless white crystalline powder with a clean, slightly tart sour taste. It is readily soluble in water, alcohol, ether and acetone; it is insoluble in vegetable oils and fats. Under natural conditions, it is found in many fruits, and in an industrial way it is obtained by treating wine-making waste (tartar) with sulfuric acid.

Ultrafine powder. Increases the setting time of gypsum binders and products based on them. Recommended for the production of gypsum plaster and plaster compounds.

Depending on the dosage and formulation of gypsum plaster compositions, the setting time can be from 1 to 6 hours. Due to its ultra dispersion, the additive is perfectly distributed in the volume of the dry construction mixture when mixed in a mixer and thereby maximum efficiency is achieved (all other things being equal, it works at lower dosages).

Application

It is used as an additive to building materials based on gypsum and cement. It is a set retarder. The retarder time depends on the amount of tartaric acid introduced. It is mainly used in gypsum materials to improve the quality and productivity of work. It is also used in quick-setting cement compositions. Many retarders have plasticizing properties.
