Optically active 12-D-hydroxystearic acid (12-HSA) gives a thermally reversible organogel in several organic solvents. 
When a small amount of lecithin coexists with 12-HSA in organic solvents, the mechanical strength of the organogel is remarkably reduced.

The ability of 12-HSA to self-assemble is associated with the presence, position, and enantiomeric purity of the hydroxy group along the fatty acid chain.

Castor oil is the source of numerous products and is the only commercial source of the fatty acid ricinoleate, 12-hydroxy-oleate. 
Hydrogenated castor oil is similarly useful as the source of 12-hydroxy-stearic acid, best known as a component of lithium grease. 
Mono- and diacylglycerols are derived from castor oil and are useful in development of lubricants and emulsifiers for cosmetics, pharmaceutical and food use.

We have evaluated the use of immobilized lipases to generate acylglycerols, using organic solvents to modulate the action of lipase to produce mono- and diacylglycerols, using tri-(12-hydroxy stearoyl)-glycerol as a model for hydrogenated castor oil. 
The presence of an alkylated oxygen in the solvent appears to be an important factor in supporting lipase activity, with diisopropyl ether providing the best yield of di-(12-hydroxy stearoyl)-glycerol.

Vegetable oils due to high biodegradability, low toxicity, renewability and excellent lubricating performance, have immense potential to replace mineral oils as feedstock for lubricants. 
Owing to these aspects environmentalists and engineers have made attempts to explore the possibilities of using vegetable oils as environmentally friendly lubricants for range of applications. 
In this work, the tribological properties of castor oil and sesame oil in the presence of 12-hydroxystearic acid as anti-wear additive were investigated using four-ball tribometer. 
The viscosity, acid value, peroxide value and iodine value of the selected oils were determined experimentally following AOCS methods. 
Results revealed that the addition of 12-hydroxystearic acid improved the anti-wear performance of the selected vegetable oils. 
Moreover, it was noted from the results that 12-hydroxystearic acid was more effective as anti-wear additive in the castor oil as compared to sesame oil under similar experimental conditions. 
The improved anti-wear performance of the selected vegetable oils in the presence of additive may be attributed to the formation of protective layer as a result of tribochemical reaction on the metal surface.

poly-12-hydroxy stearic acid (PTHSA) was synthesized and then modified by esterification with pentaerythritol to obtain a polyol polymeric hyperdispersant (polyol-PTHSA). 
Under suitable reaction conditions (molar ratio pentaerythritol/PTHSA, 1.2:1; reaction temperature, 453 K; and reaction time, 4−8 h), the polyol-PTHSA with acid value of 3 mg of KOH/g can be obtained. 
The structures were confirmed by FT-IR analysis. 
The polyol-PTHSA was subsequently used as a hyperdispersant in the process of preparing environmentally friendly overbased calcium oleate detergent to increase the total base number of the product. 
Reaction conditions including the polymerization catalyst, the catalyst amount, the amount of xylene, the polymerization temperature, the polymerization time, the polyol-PTHSA amount, and the acid value of the PTHSA were optimized.
12-Hydroxyoctadecanoic acid is a fatty acid used as a surfactant–cleansing agent in cosmetic products. 

12-HSA is a useful component in hot-melt adhesives, inks and polishes, that reacts with acrylic esters to create durable and strong thermosetting polymers. 
These thermosetting polymers are used as a coating in metal-decorative finishes, industrial appliances and high-quality automotive applications.
