Employed In the pharma industry. As Coalescent for latex paints. Finds applications in Coatings, Nail care, Printing inks, Solvents for cosmetics and personal care, plasticizers.

2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate is a slow evaporating, water-insoluble coalescing aid for latex paints. It provides good performance characteristics, such as scrub resistance, color development, and package stability in paints. It is an excellent coalescing aid for emulsion polymers and has excellent hydrolytic stability, allowing it to be used with a wide variety of latex emulsions including high pH acrylics. When added to an emulsion paint, 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate is absorbed by the emulsions polymeric particles, softening them and causing complete fusion when the paint film dries. Since 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate is insoluble in water and therefore not in the water phase, applying the paint over a porous substrate does not result in reduced coalescing efficiency because 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate is not absorbed along with the water.

Disclosed is a method of rearrangement of the molecular structure of isomers of 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate, characterized in that two isomers in 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate is subjected to rearrangement of the molecular structure at a certain temperature and pressure, and in 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate following the rearrangement are in a mass ratio of 31.81-38.65:60.80-67.65. The process of the present invention is simple, no catalyst and other aids are required, and the content of the primary ester in 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate can be significantly increased, so as to improve the volatilization rate of 2,2,4-Trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate in a paint film, thereby reducing the drying time of the paint film and increasing the number of scrubbing of the paint film, such that the construction conditions of aqueous acrylic paints for exterior walls become relaxed, and the occurrence of floating, whitening, efflorescence, and cracking of the paint film due to water absorption by the non-dried or partly dried paint film during moist or rainy periods is avoided.

2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate is a co solvent for synthetic polymers. It swells the molecule, thus softening it and making it more sticky so that when the water evaporates and the molecules of polymer are forced together, they will for a more complete bond.2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate  normally stays in the dried film but very slowly migrates out. As this and other semi permanent chemicals leave the dried film, shrinkage results as well as hardening and possibly cracking of the film. It is used mainly as an industrial coating solvent in latex paints but can also be used as a chemical intermediate which is converted to other chemical substances that are then used in plasticizers. This product is also used to produce adhesives, inks. dyestuffs, detergents, cleaning agents, surface treatment agents, fertilizers, and as a solvent.

2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate acts as an effective coalescer in a variety of latex paint formulations, such as acrylate and polyvinyl acetate homo- and copolymers, and styrene-butadiene and vinyl acetate-ethylene latexes.
2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate lowers the minimum film-forming temperature of latex. The use of a coalescing additive ensures the performance of the paint even at low temperatures. Thus, coalescing additives are an effective tool that provides high results, including if the dyeing is done under less than ideal conditions.
A clear, colorless liquid widely used as a solvent in industrial coatings. Ester and alcohol based. This product should be used as a coalescer in latex paint formulations. The product lowers the minimum film forming temperature (MTP). The product plasticizes the emulsion polymer particles, allowing them to fuse and form an excellent film at lower temperatures than is usually possible.

2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate is the premier coalescent for latex paints. It performs well in all types of latex paints, in a variety of weather conditions, and over substrates with different levels of porosity. 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate provides the highest level of film integrity at low levels of coalescent, enhancing the performance properties of the paint including low temperature coalescence, touch-up, scrub resistance, washability, color development, thermal flexibility, and resistance to mudcracking. 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate  also enhances thickening efficiency when used with associative thickeners.

2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol monoisobutyrate also works well in a variety of other applications. It is an ideal choice as a retarder solvent for use in coil coatings and high-bake enamels. Its unique balance of properties also makes it useful for a variety of chemical specialty applications such as ore flotation / frothing, oil-drilling muds, wood preservative carriers, and floor polishes.
