3,3'-methylene bis[5-methyloxazolidine] has no tetrahedral stereo-chemistry.

3,3'-methylene bis[5-methyloxazolidine] is registered under the REACH Regulation and is manufactured in and / or imported to the European Economic Area, at ≥ 1 000 to < 10 000 tonnes per annum.

3,3'-methylene bis[5-methyloxazolidine] , MBO or "reaction product of paraformaldehyde and 2-hydroxypropylamine (ratio 3:2)" , is a so-called formaldehyde releaser and is used as a biocide for the preservation of liquids, such as eg B. water -based paints and cooling lubricants , and used as a hydrogen sulfide scavenger in oil and gas processing.

The "reaction product of paraformaldehyde and 1-aminopropan-2-ol in a ratio of 3:2" is a so-calledUVCB substance( unknown or variable composition, complex reaction products or biological materials) and is formed during the conversion offormaldehydeHCHO orparaformaldehyde(HCHO) n in addition to α,α′,α′′-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazine-1,3,5( 2H ,4H,6H ) -triethanol(HPT), which at a formaldehyde:aminopropanol ratio of 1:1 becomes the main product.

The reaction is exothermic and is maintained at 80°C.
After the water formed has been distilled off, 3,3'-methylenebis[5-methyloxazolidine] is purified by vacuum distillation .

3,3′-Methylene bis(5-methyloxazolidine) is a yellowish liquid with an amine-like odor.
3,3'-methylene bis[5-methyloxazolidine]'s aqueous solution (1.5 g cm −3 ) has an alkaline reaction (pH value 10 at 20 °C).

3,3'-methylene bis[5-methyloxazolidine] is stable at elevated temperatures (up to 186 °C) and over a wide pH range.
In an aqueous solution, MBO slowly decomposes into its starting materials 1-aminopropan-2-ol and formaldehyde (45% of which can be released).

3,3'-methylene bis[5-methyloxazolidine], MBO, has a strongbactericidalotherfungicidaleffect and inhibits the growth ofyeastotheralgae.
3,3'-methylene bis[5-methyloxazolidine] hasanti-corrosiveproperties and removes hydrogen sulfide H 2 S from process streams.
