Melamine Polyphosphate (MPP), is a melamine based halogen free flame retardant for glass fiber reinforced polyamide 66 and suitable to use in thermosetting, thermoplastic formula, especially PUR and also be widely used in PBT, PET, PA.
Melamine Polyphosphate (MPP) possesses good heat stability, decomposition temperature=330°C. 
Melamine Polyphosphate (MPP) is the main raw material for the manufacture of melamine formaldehyde resin, used as an organic element analysis reagent, and also used in the synthesis of organic and resin as a tanning agent and filler for leather processing.

Melamine Polyphosphate (MPP) decomposes endothermically above 350ºC, acting as a heat sink to cool the polymer. 
The released phosphoric acid further reacts with the polymer to form a char and inhibit the release of free radical gasses into the oxygen phase. 
Simultaneously, nitrogen species released from the degradation of melamine intumesces the char to further protect the polymer. 
Melamine Polyphosphate (MPP) based halogen free flame retardants are primarily used for glass fiber reinforced polyamide and polyester (e.g. PBT) and can be used as a synergist in many other applications and polymers.

The flame-retardant mechanism of melaflam Melamine Polyphosphate (MPP) is based on intumescence and char formation. 
Upon exposure to fire the compound dissociates itself by way of an endothermic reaction giving off inert gases that help dilute the combustible ones. 


The remaining compound forms a char around the combustible condensates, thus insulating them from oxygen that would otherwise help in flame propagation. 
25 - 30 % by weight of melaflam APP in glass fiber reinforced polyamide 6,6 achieve UL 94 V-0 rating at a thickness of 1,6 mm (1/16 in.). 
The level of melaflam APP needed is dependent on the type of glass fiber, polymer, other additives added and the efficiency of the compounding process. 
Melaflam MPP provides an excellent balance between flammability and mechanical properties with a wide processing window to 320°C (~610°F).

Melamine and phosphate are the expected breakdown products of melamine phosphate in the environment. 
When there is no melamine phosphate database, the chemical screen, such as human health, ecotoxicity, and environmental fate, primarily uses toxicity data on melamine. 
The phosphate ion is also evaluated in terms of ecological parameters but is not included in the human health analysis because it is not expected to pose a risk to humans.
