AEROSIL 200

CAS NO:7631-86-9
EC NO:231-545-4

Fumed silica, also known as pyrogenic silica because it is produced in the flame, consists of microscopic amorphous silica droplets fused into branched, chain-like, three-dimensional secondary particles, which are then aggregated into tertiary particles. The resulting powder has an extremely low bulk density and high surface area.
Aerosil 200s three-dimensional structure results in viscosity-increasing, thixotropic behavior when used as a thickening or reinforcing filler.

Since it is a hydrophilic substance, it can absorb the water in its environment.

Other names are cabosil, silica, silicon dioxide, fumed silica, officeis, pyrogenic silica, and fumed silica.

Aerosil 200 is generally insoluble in acids and organic solvents.
Aerosil 200 is soluble in hydrofluoric acid and sodium hydroxide.

Aerosil 200 is produced by hydrolysis of chlorosilanes using a high temperature oxygen-hydrogen flame.

Aerosil 200 is in the form of amorphous powder, odorless, grayish transparent in color.

Generally, there are two silica groups; Crystalline Silica and Amorphous Silica.

Crystalline Silica - Usually obtained from quartz mining. Quartz actually makes up a high percentage of the Earth's crust, so this type is widely available. This is not the form used in foods and can cause problems if inhaled for a long time.

Amorphous Silica - Found in Earth's sediments and rocks. This is also the type that consists of sediments that accumulate over time in the sediments of rivers, streams, lakes and oceans.

Aerosil 200 is mostly obtained by mining, including the mining of sand and the purification of quartz. Precipitated Silica or Amorphous Silica is produced by acidification of Sodium Silicate solutions.
Aerosil 200 is found naturally in many plants, including fibrous green vegetables, beets, bell peppers, brown rice, oats, and alfalfa.

General Description
Aerosil 200 occurs almost everywhere on earth.
Aerosil 200 is one of the most important and abundant oxides on earth, constituting about 60% weight of the earth’s crust as silica itself or in combination with other metal oxides in silicates.
Aerosil 200 commonly is found as sand in the vast ocean and river shores, their beds, deserts, rocks, and minerals.
Aerosil 200 exists in several structural forms: polymorphic crystalline silica, synthetic quartz crystals, amorphous silica, and vitreous silica. This classification is not complete as there are other forms of silica synthesized for specialized applications.
