ALUMINIUM CHLOROHYDRATE

CAS NO:12042-91-0
EC NO: 234-933-1

Aluminium chlorohydrate is a group of water-soluble,specific aluminum salts having the general formula AlnCl(3n-m)(OH)m.
Aluminum chlorohydrate is used in cosmetics as an antiperspirant and as a coagulant in water purification.

In water purification, this compound is preferred in some cases because of its high charge, which makes it more effective at destabilizing and removing suspended materials than other aluminum salts such as aluminium sulfate, aluminium chloride and various forms of polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and polyaluminium chlorisulfate, in which the aluminum structure results in a lower net charge than aluminium chlorohydrate. Further, the high degree of neutralization of the HCl results in minimal impact on treated water pH when compared to other aluminium and iron salts.

Uses
Aluminum chlorohydrate is one of the most common active ingredients in commercial antiperspirants. The variation most commonly used in deodorants and antiperspirants is Al2Cl(OH)5.

Aluminum chlorohydrate is also used as a coagulant in water and wastewater treatment processes to remove dissolved organic matter and colloidal particles present in suspension.

Aluminum chlorohydrate is a group of water-soluble aluminum complexes with the general formula AlnCl(3n-m)(OH)m.
Aluminum chlorohydrate is included up to 25% in over-the-counter hygiene products as an active antiperspirant agent. The primary site of action of aluminum chlorohydrate is at the level of the stratum corneum layer, which is relatively near the skin surface.
Aluminum chlorohydrate is also used as a coagulant in the water purification process.

What is Aluminum chlorohydrate?
Aluminum chlorohydrate is a simple form of a group of FDA-recognized aluminum-based salts that can be used to reduce underarm wetness  in underarm antiperspirant products.
Aluminum chlorohydrate is also widely used in water purification to remove dissolved organic material. Aluminum is the third most abundant element in the Earth's crust behind oxygen and silicon, but, like many of earth’s resources, its supply is finite.

What does Aluminum chlorohydrate do?
Aluminum chlorohydrate is one of the 18 aluminum-based active ingredients approved by the Food and Drug Association for use in over the counter underarm antiperspirant products.
Aluminum chlorohydrate works by forming a temporary plug within the sweat duct that help reduce the flow of sweat to the skin's surface.
While the aluminum chlorohydrate reduces the amount of sweat on the skin surface, the ingredient also creates a skin environment which is hostile to the growth of malodor-producing bacteria to help reduce underarm odor.

How is it made?

Aluminum chlorohydrate is typically prepared from virgin aluminum, mined and purified from naturally occurring mineral bauxite.
Aluminum chlorohydrate is very energy intensive, creates greenhouse gases and the mineral supply is finite.

In our antiperspirant products, we use an aluminum chlorohydrate prepared from recycled aluminum (recycled in the USA), which was originally refined and purified from bauxite ore. Aluminum chlorohydrate is then combined with hydrochloric acid and water and reacted under controlled conditions to form the aluminum chlorohydrate ingredient.

While efforts have reduced the carbon footprint of primary aluminum production from the mineral bauxite, preparing pure aluminum from recycled sources takes just 8 percent of the energy needed to make primary aluminum from bauxite and was the responsible/sustainable choice to serve as a source for our aluminum chlorohydrate.
Using recycled aluminum reduces energy consumption and greenhouse gas production as compared with sourcing aluminum from bauxite ore and helps to manage depletion of a global finite resource.

Its functions (INCI)
Anti-perspirant: Reduces perspiration
Astringent: Helps tighten skin pores
Deodorant: Reduces or masks unpleasant body odor

Aluminum chlorohydrate is also used as a coagulant in the water purification process.

As water treatment plants strive to meet stricter standards, many are turning to aluminum chlorohydrate (ACH) to improve finished water quality, control costs and enhance efficiency. This specialized coagulant also can help reduce chemical solids and alkali usage while helping plant operations.

This dosage decrease with Aluminum chlorohydrate is also due to its charge characteristics. Some of the aluminum metal in Aluminum chlorohydrate is more cationic (more positively charged) than that in alum or PACl. The increased charge lets Aluminum chlorohydrate work at lower metal dosages, further lowering chemical solids generation and aluminum residual levels in finished water.

Aluminum chlorohydrate combines many of the best features of inorganic and organic coagulants. In a very real sense, it bridges the performance gap between organic polymers and traditional metal-based coagulants like alum and iron salts.

Aluminum chlorohydrate offers a number of features that set it apart from polyaluminum chloride (PACl) and alum.
Aluminum chlorohydrate is the most concentrated soluble aluminum-based coagulant available and has the highest basicity. Basicity describes the amount of hydroxide (or OH- groups) associated with the aluminum aggregates.

Aluminum chlorohydrate helps treat settled waters in conventional plants as a filter aid, an application that is similar to that in direct filtration plants.
Use of Aluminum chlorohydrate also can benefit plants using organic polymer filter aids. Problems with organic polymers arise because they do not penetrate the filter bed deeply and can stick to the upper surface, leading to filter fouling, mud balling and shorter run lengths.

Aluminum chlorohydrate removes particles efficiently because its cationic charge density is higher than that of other inorganic coagulants. As an enhanced coagulant, it generally removes colloids and particles less than 10m, a size range that encompasses bacteria and parasites, and is the most troublesome portion of the fine fraction.

Aluminum chlorohydrate offers a highly efficient approach to coagulation that provides strong cost and operational efficiencies while producing high water quality.
Aluminum chlorohydrate provides many benefits, including less pH reduction, sludge generation and alkalinity removal than other metal-based coagulants.

Aluminum chlorohydrate is classified as :
Antiperspirant
Astringent
Deodorant

Aluminum chlorohydrate is characterized by the highest aluminum concentration (23% Al2O3) in any commercially available aluminum-based solution.
Aluminum chlorohydrate has a high cationic charge which makes it very effective at removing even very small particles required for drinking water purification.
In addition, Aluminum chlorohydrate creates strong flocs that dewater well and leads to reduced levels of chemical sludge.

Because of the inherently high basicity (80-85%), Aluminum chlorohydrate needs less alkalinity in the raw water than other coagulants.
As a result, Aluminum chlorohydrate can be used in both high- and low-alkalinity waters, and it has very low impact on treated water alkalinity levels, so it decreases or eliminates the need for alkali addition.

Aluminum chlorohydrate is made using high-quality raw materials and thus have very low levels of impurities, making it suitable for both drinking water applications and high demanding industrial applications.
Applications: Antiperspirant & deodorant products as sticks, roll-ons, aerosols, creams, gels, sprays.

What Is It?
Aluminum Chlorohydrate and Aluminum Sesquichlorohydrate are solids. Aluminum Dichlorohydrate occurs as a white to yellow powder.
The Aluminum Chlorohydrate complexes are used in the formulation of personal cleanliness products.

Why is it used in cosmetics and personal care products?
Aluminum Chlorohydrate complexes are ingredients that are applied to the skin to reduce the production of perspiration at the site of application, to induce a tightening or tingling sensation of the skin and to reduce or eliminate unpleasant odor and that protect against the formation of such odors on the skin.
