PREPARATION OF ALUMINUM NITRATE:
You won’t easily form aluminum nitrate just by combining nitric acid and aluminum.
In this case, aluminum will form a passivation layer.

But aluminum nitrate can be made if you combine aluminum trichloride and nitric acid.
By doing so, you will also create a by-product, nitrosyl chloride, which oozes from the solution in the form of a gas.

Aluminum nitrate can be also made if you mix aluminum sulfate and lead nitrate.
Lead sulfate will precipitate from the solution, and only aluminum nitrate will be left in the solution.

PREPARATION OF ALUMINUM NITRATE:

Al(OH)₃ + 3 HNO₃ → Al(NO₃)₃ + 3 H₂O

Purification: 
The solution may contain impurities that are removed through methods such as filtration or centrifugation.

Concentration: 
The purified solution of aluminum nitrate is concentrated by evaporating water, often under reduced pressure to lower the boiling point and prevent decomposition.

Crystallization:

PREPARATION METHOD OF ALUMINUM NITRATE:
The metallic aluminum is dissolved in nitric acid with heating.
The solution is boiled with heating and filtered.

The filtrate from which the impurities and the remaining aluminum were removed is acidified with nitric acid.
The solution is concentrated by evaporation at a temperature not higher than 74 °C until crystallization occurs.

The precipitated crystals are filtered.
Crystals are washed with ice water.

Crystals are dried in a desiccator with sulfuric acid for a short time.

PREPARATION METHOD OF ALUMINUM NITRATE:
Aluminum metal or aluminum hydroxide is dissolved in dilute nitric acid.
Heated to promote its dissolution.
Filtered to remove undissolved matter.

After the solution is concentrated and cooled, crystals may be precipitated.
The crystallization is a hydrate of aluminum nitrate.
The amount of water of crystallization depends on the concentration of nitric acid used and the cooling temperature.

If the relative density of nitric acid is 1.42 and the cooling temperature is 20 °C, the precipitate is nonahydrate.
If the relative density of nitric acid is 1.50, the precipitate is hexahydrate [Al(NO₃)₃·6H₂O].
To prepare anhydrous aluminum nitrate, aluminum bromide and nitric acid chloride (ClNO₃) in liquid bromine is used.

The reaction is conducted below -7 °C.
Due to the explosive nature of nitric acid, caution must be taken.

Aluminum Nitrate has good solubility in water (73.9 g/100 ml at 20 °C), but is less soluble in alcohols and ethylene glycol.
Aluminum Nitrate melts at 66 °C (anhydrous) and 73.9 °C (nonahydrate), and if heated higher the nonahydrate will decompose.

PREPARATION OF ALUMINUM NITRATE:
Aluminum nitrate cannot be made by adding Aluminum to nitric acid, as the Aluminum forms a passivation layer which prevents the reaction from taking place.
One way around Aluminum Nitrate is to add nitric acid to another compound of Aluminum, such as Aluminum chloride, a reaction which gives off nitrosyl chloride fumes.

If you want to avoid the fumes, use Aluminum hydroxide as a precursor chemical, which can be obtained by adding a soluble hydroxide to an Aluminum salt.
This reaction however will yield the hydrated form.

Obtaining anhydrous Aluminum nitrate is difficult, as it tends to decompose when heated, making it a poor choice for oxidizer in pyrotechnic mixtures.
