AMYL SALICYLATE

CAS NO.:  2050-08-0
EC/LIST NO.: 218-080-2

Amyl salicylate is a benzoate ester.
Amyl salicylate  is refined by esterification of salicylic acid and pentanol catalyzed by sulfuric acid.
Amyl salicylate has often been referred to as having an odour similar to orchids.
Amyl salicylate  has also been included in perfumes to help fix floral fragrances to the skin.
Amyl salicylate is produced from salicylic acid by an esterification reaction.
Amyl salicylate is the registered trade name of the chemical pentyl ortho hydroxy benzoate, also known as pentyl salicylate, and has the formula C6H4(OH)COOC5H11.
This colourless liquid is frequently used in perfumes for its ability to counteract and/or mask unpleasant smells.
Amyl salicylate has often been referred to as having an odour similar to orchids.
Amyl salicylate  has also been included in perfumes to help fix floral fragrances to the skin.
In addition to perfumes, the chemical is often included in shampoo, soaps, deodorant, hair sprays and fabric softeners.
Amyl salicylate is a colorless to pale yellow clear liquid; its odor type is floral and its odor at 100% is described as ‘herbal floral clover azalea green sweet chocolate’.
Amyl salicylate has been identified by chemical analysis in none of 91 essential oils, which have caused contact allergy / allergic contact dermatitis.

This colourless liquid is frequently used in perfumes for its ability to counteract and/or mask unpleasant smells.
Amyl salicylate has also been included in perfumes to help fix floral fragrances to the skin.
In addition to perfumes, the chemical is often included in shampoo, soaps, deodorant, hair sprays and fabric softeners.

Amyl salicylate belongs to the organic education classes as o-hydroxybenzoic acid esters.
These are benzoic acid esters of benzene or hydroxy group ileo-substitutes.
Agent raft is relative (neutral as pKa) as an extremely weak base.
Amyl salicylate is a sweet, azalea and chocolate flavor salicyte.

The term ‘amyl salicylate’ is not solely used for pentyl salicylate as it is sometimes used to refer to its chemical isomer.
An isomer is a substance with the same molecular formula that differs in the way that its atoms are arranged.
In this case, the molecular formula is still C12H16 O3 but the structural formula is C6H4(OH)COOCH2CH2CH(CH3)2 (see image below).
In fact, the amyl salicylate used commercially is often the isomer form of the compound.
The isomer form of amyl salicylate is a clear liquid that is insoluble in water and has an orchid-like scent.
The commercial use of the isomer is similar to that of the above substance, as both are used for the same purpose.
Though not used particularly for medicinal applications, studies into the two isomers have also suggested that they can reduce pain, fever and inflammation.

Amyl Salicylate has a floral and sweet, herbaceous and balsamic character, with a greenish tone.
Amyl salicylate  is extensively employed in florals and can be an important ingredient for fougeres.

The main salicylates used in sunscreens are homomenthyl salicylate (homosalate), ethylhexyl salicylate (octyl salicylate) and trolamine salicylate.
They have weak UVB absorbing properties and are generally used in combination with other chemical absorbing sunscreen agents.
Topical salicylates do not protect against UVA.

There are many kinds of salicylates belonging to perfumes.
The most commonly used are methyl salicylate, isoamyl salicylate and benzyl salicylate.

Amyl salicylate  has a content of 96% in birch bark oil, and also has a certain content in essential oils such as cinnamon oil, ylang-ylang oil, violet oil and tuberose oil, but not in other essential oils.
Salicylate is reported.

Amyl salicylate  is the most important type of starch ester and is the main component of the mixed clover extract.

Amyl salicylate is used as a variety of conditioners and fixatives for the preparation of carnation flavors.
Amyl salicylate  can be mixed with oak moss extract, sesame oil and geraniol.

Amyl salicylate is an organic synthetic raw material.
Amyl salicylate is also used as a soap essence and solvent.

While not a constituent of volatile oils, salicylic acid amyl ester, also known as orchidee, trefle or trefol, finds extensive application in perfumery and may, therefore, be mentioned.
Amyl salicylate  is a colorless or yellowish liquid, the strongly aromatic odor of which reminds of some of the orchids.

In as much as the ester is not readily saponifiable, Amyl salicylate   is necessary for a quantitative saponification to heat it with an excess of alkali for two hours on a wather bath.
Indeed, Amyl salicylate  is well to apply this precaution to other esters of salicylic acid.

In addition to its use as a perfume, amyl salicylate is also employed to fix the odor of finer perfumes.
Therapeutically it has also been successfully employed as a remedy against rheumatism.5)
