Recommended Dosage
Water Flooding
THPS biocide should be added to a water flood system at a point where uniform mixing will occur. First step: add 93 -350 ppm THPS for a noticeably fouled system, when added to a flowing system, slug dose for 2 -6 hours based on flow rates. Repeat as necessary until control is achieved. Second step: Once control has been achieved, add 14 -98 ppm THPS biocide weekly or as needed to maintain control. As for continuous treatment, THPS can be dosed continuously at a level of 14 -67 ppm.

Oil and Gas Production and Transmission Systems and Pipeline
THPS 75% solution should be added at a point in the pipeline where uniform mixing will occur. The application should be conducted to ensure maximum distribution of product through the internal surface of the pipeline by adding an amount of biocide which eventually comes out the other end of the pipeline. Criteria for success of the treatment will be reduction in bacterial count and/or corrosion rates. Adding step is same as that of water flooding. As for continuous treatment, THPS can be dosed continuously at a level of 14 -100 ppm.

Drilling Muds, Well Completion and Workover Fluids
THPS biocide should be added to these fluids at a point where uniform mixing will occur. Add 33-1400 ppm of product to a freshly prepared fluid depending on severity of contamination.

Gas Storage Well systems
Individual injection wells should be treated with THPS 75 at the same dosage and same steps as described under water flooding. Injections should be repeated as needed to maintain control. Individual drips should be treated with a sufficient quantity of product to produce a concentration of 33.3 -133.3 ppm when diluted by the water present in the drip. Injections should be repeated as needed to maintain control. Some oilfield drilling service companies in US and Canada started to use Xanthan Gum, THPS Biocide and Curdlan Gum in water flooding process.

Textile operations include fiber synthesis, weaving, manufacturing, dyeing, and finishing.

Also, Disinfectants are chemicals used to inhibit or kill microorganisms. Disinfectants are also called antiseptics or biocides. Disinfectants are generally used in physical media (solutions or on surfaces) while antiseptics are applied to skin or other living tissue. Some of these agents are also used as preservatives for food, drugs, and other domestic and industrial products. Many of these chemicals are skin and respiratory sensitizers. The following can cause occupational asthma: glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde, sodium bisulfite, chloramine T, hexachlorophene, chlorohexidine, benzalkonium chloride, isononanoyl oxybenzene sulfonate, lauryl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride, and isothiazolinones. A study of 175 workers exposed to chloramines, aldehydes, and quaternary ammonium disinfectants in the food industry showed increased acute irritation symptoms but not chronic respiratory symptoms.

Both oil base and water base fracturing fluids are being used in the fracturing industry. Water base, which includes alcohol-water mixtures and low strength acids, make up the majority of treating fluids. The common chemicals added to these fluids are polymers for viscosity development, crosslinkers for viscosity enhancement, pH control chemicals, gel breakers for polymer degradation following the treatment, surfactants, clay stabilizers, alcohol, bactericides, fluid loss additives and friction reducer. /Hydraulic fracturing
Hydraulic fracturing uses a specially blended liquid which is pumped into a well under extreme pressure causing cracks in rock formations underground. These cracks in the rock then allow oil and natural gas to flow, increasing resource production. ... Regulatory approval in the United States has been granted to Dow Microbial Control for the antimicrobial THPS (tetrakis [hydroxymethyl] phosphonium sulfate) for industrial water treatment applications.

The broad-spectrum biocide, marketed under the name Aqucar THPS 75, reduces the growth of algae, yeasts and mold in process waters used in industrial applications. The widely used product has been available in other regions since September 2006.

"With good, quality water is becoming scarce and expensive, Aqucar THPS 75 provides another key biocide for gas and oil, and water treatment applications, helping gas and oil service companies increase production and increase asset integrity," says Nanette Hermsen, the strategic marketing manager at Dow Microbial Control, Buffalo Grove, Ill.

According to the manufacturer, the biocide is particularly effective against sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), which often are problematic in enhanced oil recovery operations such as injection water treatment, top-side systems, pipeline protection and storage. The THPS is able to kill microorganisms and reduce hydrogen sulfide concentrations and dissolve iron sulfide. It can be used in both acid and alkaline environments.

A number of individual products or combination products for hydrostatic test applications are available depending on the conditions of the water and the preference of the operator. These products are most often oxygen scavengers, biocides and corrosion inhibitors. Recent reports have alluded to incompatibles existing between certain biocides and sulfite oxygen scavengers. In this paper the compatibility of the biocide tetrakis(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium sulfate (THPS) and the oxygen scavenger ammonium bisulfite (ABS) were explored. Performance testing of both the biocide in the presence of the oxygen scavenger and the oxygen scavenger in the presence of biocide occur

Tetrakis(hydroxymethyl) Phosphonium Sulfate, commonly referred to as THPS, is used in oilfield application worldwide as a biocide. THPS has been reported to have compatibility concerns with oxygen scavengers, in particular bisulfite (i.e. sodium or ammonium) in these applications.1,2 The literature has pointed at concerns that the interaction is so severe that when THPS and bisulfite are allowed to react they will generate molecular oxygen (O2) in situ1. Upon literature review no mechanistic theory has been proposed to support this view, however several attempts to support the theory via electrochemical oxidation of the phosphorus from a +3 to +5 and the subsequent reduction of the sulfur have been proposed. Further support is attempted by calculating the Gibbs free energy; a negative value would indicate a spontaneous reaction.

The literature does not address that although this reaction is favorable from a thermodynamic point of view, it lacks supporting evidence for other factors that contribute to an overall reaction mechanism. One factor that could help shed light on the interaction of the two reactive species is that when two speices react, one or both of the reactants should be consumed. If this were the case, THPS and/or bisulfite residuals would be at lower levels at the end of the reaction. Monitoring residuals of both THPS and bisulfite could help give further insight into this interaction.

It uses as biocide, So, oil and gas production occurs throughout the world. Each oilfield is unique and the construction and development of each new oilfield presents many challenges and opportunities for petroleum engineers. Differences in geology, topography, and climate in and around an oilfield will dictate how the oilfield is developed, maintained, and eventually decommissioned. However, one thing that is a constant in an oilfield, regardless of its location, is the need for biocides. Biocides are used in all stages of oilfield development, from the initial drilling of the wells and the day to day production of oil and gas, and in all aspects of the maintenance of the field. They play an important role in the life of an oilfield and are a valuable tool in ensuring that oil and gas are produced safely and reliably.

The global tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate market, in terms of value, is estimated to account for nearly USD 202 million in 2019 and projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5%, to reach approximately USD 279 million by 2025. The growth of the oil & gas and textile industries is driving the THPS market as the demand and frequency of use have increased. With a large number of plants using THPS as an anti-microbial agent, the requirement for the chemical is expected to rise in the near future.
The biocides segment in the tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium sulfate market is projected to be the fastest-growing segment. THPS as a biocide is an important chemical used in hydraulic fracturing as well as water treatment systems. Biocides are used mainly for killing and controlling bacteria, as they can cause instability in viscosity and pose high threats. THPS was used initially as an industrial biocide in cooling systems. THPS biocides are aqueous solutions that do not contain volatile organic compounds
THPS has become the most widely used biocide in oilfields, where sulfate-reducing bacteria create major problems. Another major reason for its use is that it is suitable for downhole applications (well drilling process). The treatment of oil wells with THPS has resulted in increased oil production due to the dissolution of iron sulfide after the use of THPS. However, it is the biocidal function of THPS, which is encouraging its increasing use in the oil & gas industry.

Based on function,
