ARALDITE EPN 1180 X 80 is specifically developed for advanced protective coating and lining applications where exceptional chemical resistance, corrosion protection, and elevated temperature performance are required.

ARALDITE EPN 1180 X 80 is based on a multifunctional phenolic novolac structure, which contains multiple reactive epoxide groups per molecule.
This high functionality enables the formation of densely crosslinked thermoset networks when cured with suitable hardeners such as amines or anhydrides.

Compared to conventional bisphenol-A epoxy resins, ARALDITE EPN 1180 X 80 offers significantly improved resistance to aggressive chemicals, including strong acids, alkalis, solvents, and petroleum derivatives.
The enhanced crosslink density achieved during curing contributes to higher glass transition temperature (Tg), improved mechanical strength, and superior barrier properties.
These characteristics make the product particularly suitable for demanding industrial environments such as chemical processing plants, refineries, marine structures, wastewater facilities, and heavy-duty infrastructure systems.

The 80% solvent-based formulation reduces viscosity compared to solid novolac resins, improving application characteristics such as flow, leveling, and film formation.
This allows easier processing through spray, roller, or brush application methods while maintaining high-build coating performance.
Once cured, coatings formulated with ARALDITE EPN 1180 X 80 exhibit excellent adhesion to steel, concrete, and other industrial substrates, along with strong resistance to thermal cycling and mechanical stress.

Due to its multifunctional epoxy backbone and optimized solids content, ARALDITE EPN 1180 X 80 is widely selected for corrosion-resistant linings, tank coatings, pipe coatings, heavy-duty flooring systems, and protective topcoats requiring long-term durability in harsh service conditions.

Compatibility and Dilution of ARALDITE EPN 1180 X 80:
ARALDITE EPN 1180 X 80 and its solutions are fully compatible with modified and unmodified epoxy resins based on bisphenol-A as well as with aliphatic and aromatic reactive diluents.
They are likewise miscible with most commercially available polyamines and their adducts.
Compatibility with polyamidoamines such as the Aradur 815-2, 825-2, 840-2 is limited.

Production of ARALDITE EPN 1180 X 80:
ARALDITE EPN 1180 X 80 is produced through the glycidylation of phenolic novolac resins using epichlorohydrin under controlled alkaline conditions.
In the first stage, phenol reacts with formaldehyde to form a novolac resin with multiple phenolic hydroxyl groups.
This novolac backbone provides the multifunctional structure required for high epoxy functionality.

In the second stage, the phenolic novolac reacts with epichlorohydrin in the presence of a base, typically sodium hydroxide, to form glycidyl ether groups.
This reaction introduces epoxide rings onto the aromatic structure, generating a multifunctional epoxy novolac resin.
Careful control of temperature, molar ratios, and reaction time is essential to achieve the desired epoxy equivalent weight (EEW) and minimize residual chlorine content.

Following resin formation, purification steps such as washing and vacuum stripping are applied to remove unreacted materials, salts, and volatile components.
The resulting solid or highly viscous epoxy novolac resin is then dissolved in a selected organic solvent to achieve approximately 80% solids content, forming the ARALDITE EPN 1180 X 80 solution grade.

Final production steps include filtration, quality control testing (EEW, viscosity, solid content, color, and residual chloride), and packaging under controlled conditions to prevent moisture contamination.
The manufacturing process ensures consistent multifunctional epoxy structure, high purity, and stable performance in demanding protective coating applications.
