Description of Arcosolv PMA
Arcosolv PMA is a colorless, liquid with low toxicity. 
Arcosolv PMA has a characteristic ester odor and is soluble in water to the extent of 18% at 20°C. 
Arcosolv PMA has excellent solvency for a variety of substances including acrylic, nitrocellulose and urethane coating resins. 
Arcosolv PMA is a substitute for certain ethylene glycol (E-series) ether acetates, particularly EEA and EMA.

Applications Arcosolv PMA
Coatings: Glycol Ether PMA is extensively used in many decorative and protective coating formulations.
Glycol Ether PMA has a similar evaporation rate and solvency compared to EEA in an acrylicepoxy baking enamel formulation. 
Arcosolv PMA is also found to give better gloss and image distinction.
Cleaners: Glycol Ether propylene glycol ethers are generally recommended over their acetates because acetates are subject to hydrolysis in very alkaline water-based cleaners.
However, for solvent-based cleaning, including metal degreasing and specialized equipment cleansing, 
Arcosolv PMA alone and in conjunction with other solvents is being evaluated as a replacement for many chlorinated solvents. 
The direction of current regulations is to eliminate the use of many chlorinated solvents in this application.
Arcosolv PMAshows very broad solvency. Its solvency characteristics generally match those of chlorinated solvents more closely than do glycol ethers and alcohols.
Electronics: Another area where Glycol Ether PMA has replaced EEA is in photoresist formulations used in semiconductor processing. 
In these processes, Arcosolv PMA is used in the positive photoresist formulation.
Arcosolv PMA may also be used in solvent systems for cleaning and degreasing circuit boards and removing solder flux.
Other Applications: The properties listed in the previous section also support the use of Arcosolv PMA in agricultural, cosmetic, ink, textile and adhesive products.
General industry practice is to store Glycol Ether PMA in carbon steel vessels. 
Avoid contact with air when storing for long periods of time.
Store only in tightly closed, properly vented containers away from heat, sparks, open flame or
strong oxidizing agents. Use only non-sparking tools. Ground containers before beginning transfer.
Electrical equipment should conform to national electric code.
Handle empty containers carefully. Flammable combustible residue remains after emptying. 
Store in properly lined steel or stainless steel to avoid slight discoloration from mild steel.

Electronics: Arcosolv PMA has been used in the electronics industry for many years as a photoresist stripper.
 ow, with the phase out of CFC’s, Arcosolv PMA has gained widespread acceptance as a solvent in other electronic applications including semi-aqueous defluxing, degreasing, and coatings (polyamide, epoxy and polyurethane).
Graffiti Removers: Arcosolv PMAbased graffiti removers combine high performance and biodegradability with low volatility and low flammability. 
Arcosolv PMA can be blended with glycol ethers or acetates such as Arcosolv PMA, Arcosolv DPMA; they are cost effective and improve performance on surfaces defaced by lipstick and crayon graffiti.
Agricultural: The agricultural chemical industry takes advantage of NMP’s solvency and handling properties in agricultural formulations.
Pharmaceuticals: Arcosolv PMA is used as a solvent in pharmaceutical synthetic procedure because of its broad solvency. 
One potential use for Arcosolv PMA is as a dermal penetration enhancer for pharmaceuticals.
Consumer and Industrial Cleaners: Arcosolv PMA is an effective stripping agent used in floor stripping, poven cleaners, graffiti removers, and paint strippers. 
Due to Arcosolv PMA's high solvency and low volatility, it is used in automotive and industrial cleaners with solvents such as hydrocarbons, terpenes, Arconate Propylene Carbonate and P-Series glycol ethers. 

Coatings Solvent: Arcosolv PMA is a powerful solvent for most commercial resins. 
Due to Arcosolv PMA's high boiling point and excellent solvent power, Arcosolv PMA extends and improves the properties of high temperature bake coatings. 
For instance, high solid binders are more easily obtained with Arcosolv PMA.

Arcosolv PMA also aids rheological control: better flow and leveling -less cratering and pinholing.

Arcosolv PMA is also the preferred solvent for urethane dispersions and is an excellent coalescent for acrylic and styrene acrylic latexes.

What is Arcosolv PMA?
Arcosolv PMA is a clear liquid that has limited miscibility with water.  It is a medium volatility solvent with a mild odour and has the formula C6H12O3.

How is Arcosolv PMA produced?
Arcosolv PMA is produced when ethylene, or propylene, oxide is reacted with alcohol.  
This forms glycol monoethers which are then esterified with acetic acid to produce PMA.

The estimated global production of methoxy propyl acetate is between 300,000 and 500,000 tonnes annually.

How isArcosolv PMA stored and distributed?
Arcosolv PMA is generally distributed in 200 kg drums and should be stored in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area.  
For transport purposes Arcosolv PMA is classified as packing group III, hazard class 3.

What is Arcosolv PMA used for?
There are several applications for methoxy propyl acetate.  
The first is as a solvent as PMA has good solvent power for many resins and dyes.  
Arcosolv PMA is used in dyes for furniture polish or wood stains, and in dye solutions and pastes for printing. 
Arcosolv PMA is also used in processes that colour leather and textiles, and in ball-point pen pastes.
Arcosolv PMA can also be used as a coalescent in coatings, and is particularly suitable for coatings containing polyisocyanates.  
Arcosolv PMAcan also be used as a binder for core sands in foundries and is also utilised as a cleaning agent in the electronics industry.
