ASCORBYL GLUCOSIDE

CAS NUMBER: 129499-78-1

MOLECULAR WEIGHT: 338.26

Ascorbyl glucoside is a stable form of vitamin C combined with the sugar glucose.
The glucose is derived from a natural starch source, such as rice, while the vitamin C portion is synthetic.
When properly formulated and absorbed into skin, it breaks down to ascorbic acid, also known as pure vitamin C.
Once absorbed, its breakdown to vitamin C is gradual, creating what’s known as a reservoir effect within skin.
This leads to longer-lasting benefits.
Sometimes referred to as AA2G, ascorbyl glucoside functions as an antioxidant and works well with other replenishing and antioxidant ingredients to preserve key substances skin needs to look smoother, brighter, and younger.
Research on ascorbyl glucoside’s ability to improve uneven skin tone and hyperpigmentation is encouraging but not as extensive when compared with the decades of research amassed for ascorbic acid; however, ascorbyl glucoside plus the B vitamin niacinamide is a viable combination to consider, and several skin care products pair these ingredients.
Ascorbyl glucoside is typically used in concentrations of 2–5% when brightening dull skin and fading the look of hyperpigmentation is the goal.
Products with higher concentrations are available, but comparative research with commonly used concentrations is lacking.
Levels of 0.5% and above can provide antioxidant benefits and help neutralize the damage associated with exposure to airborne pollutants and other environmental threats.
Ascorbyl glucoside’s considered safe as used in cosmetics, both rinse-off and leave-on.

Ascorbyl glucoside is widely compatible with other cosmetic ingredients.
Unlike the tight pH range ascorbic acid needs to be effective on skin, ascorbyl glucoside works between a pH of 5–8, with the lower end of this spectrum considered better due to being a close match to the normal pH range of skin.
As an antioxidant, ascorbyl glucoside plays nice with many different ingredients, though it works especially well with niacinamide, a type of vitamin B.
"When combined, these two ingredients can help address issues such as loss of firmness and elasticity, wrinkles and fine lines, unevenness in the complexion, and large pores," explains Solomon.
All antioxidants also work well with sunscreen, offering an added layer of protection.
At the risk of channeling overly complicated, high school chemistry class vibes, ascorbyl glucoside is a water-soluble form of vitamin C that's combined with glucose, a sugar.
In the world of vitamin C and its derivatives, l-ascorbic acid is the most potent, pure version (just like retinoic acid is when you're talking about retinoids).1
"Once ascorbyl glucoside is absorbed into the skin, an enzyme called alpha-glucosidas breaks it down into l-ascorbic acid," explains Nussbaum.

Ascorbyl glucoside is why you then get all those awesome vitamin C effects such as skin-brightening and wrinkle-smoothing, but, in this case, because it's undergone a conversion process, it's much less likely to cause irritation.
Ascorbyl glucoside also makes it much more stable; whereas l-ascorbic acid is notoriously unstable and easily rendered inactive by exposure to oxygen or light, ascorbyl glucoside is a lot more stable in heat, light exposure, and oxygen, says Solomon.
And that's exactly why it's so often used in so many beauty products. (FYI, you may also see it listed on an ingredient label as Vitamin CG.)
The bottom line: While ascorbyl glucoside is not as potent as the pure stuff, because it is so stable you can feel confident it's working, and it's also gentler on skin.
As mentioned, it's not as strong as l-ascorbic acid, but it is gentler and more stable.
The other big thing it has going for it? Unlike l-ascorbic acid, ascorbyl glucoside is water-soluble, meaning it can be formulated into many skincare products that are water-based, such as serums, notes Nussbaum.
It's much more similar to sodium ascorbyl phosphate, another type of vitamin C; both are water-soluble, stable, and gentler than l-ascorbic acid.
Further, Nussbaum says that while there's not a lot of data comparing the two, one major difference appears to be that ascorbyl glucoside remains stable at a variety of pHs, whereas sodium ascorbyl phosphate is stable at only about a pH of 7.
And that's yet another reason why the former is so often used in a variety of different product formulations.

Ascorbyl Glucoside is used to protect skin from exposure to UV rays.
A form of skincare superstar, vitamin C.
If you do not know why vitamin C is such a big deal in skincare, we have a really detailed, geeky description that's good to read. :)
So now you know that because pure vitamin C is such a diva (very unstable and hard to formulate) the cosmetic industry is trying to come up with some derivatives that have the badass anti-aging properties of vitamin C (antioxidant protection + collagen boosting + fading hyperpigmentation) but without the disadvantages.
This is a hard task, and there is not yet a derivative that is really proven to be better in every aspect, but Ascorbyl Glucoside is one of the best options when it comes to vitamin C derivatives.
First, it's really stable and easy to formulate, so the problems that come with pure vitamin C are solved here.
Second, in vitro (meaning made in the lab, not on real humans) studies show that ascorbyl glucoside can penetrate the skin.
Ascorbyl glucoside is kind of important for an anti-aging ingredient to do the job, so this is good news, though in-vivo (made on real humans) studies are still needed.
Third, in-vitro studies show that after ascorbyl glucoside is absorbed into the skin it is converted to pure vitamin C (though the rate of conversion is still a question mark). It also shows all the three anti-aging benefits (antioxidant protection + collagen boosting + fading hyperpigmentation) that pure vitamin C does.
Ascorbyl glucoside is one of the best and most promising vitamin C derivatives that shows similar benefits to that of pure vitamin C, but it's less proven (in vivo vs. in vitro studies) and the extent of the benefits are also not the same.
Ascorbyl Glucoside is a water-soluble derivative of Vitamin C.
Ascorbyl glucoside is much more stable in water but it is less potent than direct L-Ascorbic Acid. Being more compatible with water allows for a very pleasant serum texture.
Ascorbyl glucoside is considered a gold standard of Vitamin C derivatives due to its high stability and comfortable use, but it's impossible to achieve extremely high L-Ascorbic Acid potency with this solution.

Aside from the general benefits of pure Vitamin C, Ascorbyl Glucoside has been shown to offer specific skin brightening benefits.
Ascorbyl Glucoside is a water-soluble derivative of Vitamin C.
Arriving in a serum form, the vitamin packed solution is stable and effective, whilst also being comfortable to use.
The concentrated Vitamin C formula is able to offer antioxidant properties, as well as visibly brightening skin tone and reducing signs of ageing, such as fine lines and wrinkles.
Expect bright skin that is comfortably hydrated and radiant.
The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12% is one of eight different vitamin C serums created by beauty brand we're all obsessed with.
It’s the only one that comes in a light serum formula.
It has a water base and so, unlike most other vitamin C serums, it is entirely oil-free which makes it a good choice for those with oily skin.
In general terms, The Ordinary’s Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12% is a powerful antioxidant that will protect skin against skin-damaging free radicals, pollution, and UV, while also working to prevent the production of melanin (which is what gives skin its color) which, over time, fades and prevents dark spots while also boosting collagen production and generally brightening the overall appearance of skin.
Ascorbyl glucoside is a form of vitamin C that is used in skincare products.
Unlike L-ascorbic acid, which is the naturally occurring form of vitamin C, ascorbyl glucoside is a stable form of vitamin C when paired with glucose.

Ascorbyl glucoside is a notoriously unstable form of vitamin C that often breaks down when exposed to air and sunlight.
While L-ascorbic acid can be stabilized with ferulic acid and antioxidants it presents many difficulties with formulating.
Ascorbyl glucoside has been studied for its superior stability and penetrative abilities compared to L-ascorbic acid.
While ascorbyl glucoside is thought to break down to ascorbic acid when absorbed into the skin, there is little evidence to support how well it does so.
Vitamin C is used to help improve the appearance of the skin, potentially reducing pigmentation and dullness.
Some studies have suggested that vitamin C may also help to support collagen production and inflammation.
Ascorbyl Glucoside is a highly effective antioxidant, improves collagen synthesis and reduces wrinkles.
With its skin-lightening effect, the active ingredient is a popular ingredient for corresponding skin creams and care products.
The active ingredient is an ascorbic acid derivative and is metabolized to vitamin C after penetrating the skin.

Ascorbyl Glucoside repairs and protects against skin damage caused by sun rays.
Ascorbyl Glucoside has been shown to offer specific skin brightening benefits.
Ascorbyl glucoside has no conflicts and plays nicely with other products.
Ascorbyl glucoside can be applied as a water-based serum (before anhydrous, oils and creams).
Directions: Apply a few drops to face AM and PM. If irritation occurs, cease use and consult a physician.
Use only as directed on unbroken skin. Patch testing prior to use is advised.

Ascorbyl glucoside is a derivative of ascorbic acid (AA), also known as vitamin C, can be obtained through diet from plants such as citrus fruits and leafy green vegetables.
While ascorbyl glucoside shares many similarities to its precursor form, AA, its structure is less volatile and more favorable to use in skincare formulations.
For this reason, the use of ascorbyl glucoside in skincare is often incorporated into topical products to provide vitamin C-like benefits, which include enhanced skin radiance and increased antioxidant protection.
The use of ascorbyl glucoside for skin radiance allows for a natural, healthy glow. This may be partially due to, ascorbyl glucoside’s potent antioxidant effects.
By providing antioxidant protection, ascorbyl glucoside is able to neutralize free-radicals present in the environment, thus helping to maintain the skin’s overall quality and appearance.
The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12% is a skin brightening serum with a water-soluble stabilized Vitamin C derivate.
Vitamin C is an antioxidant that effectively brightens the skin tone and also defies signs of aging. It's for all skin types and can be used in the morning and evening, for effortless use and visible results. pH: 6.00-7.00 Suggested Usage: Apply as AM or PM serum after cleaning. Important Notice: The Ordinary products are free of sulfates, parabens, animal oils, coal tar dyes, formaldehyde, mercury, oxybenzone, mineral oil, methylchloroisothiazolinone, methylisothiazolinone, SLS, SLES & less than one percent of synthetic fragrances. All these ordinary products are coming from authorised suppliers of Deciem. Currently all our ordinary shipments are from Korea and due to regulation authorities in Korea, the product has the native/local language on it.
Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12% contains a form of vitamin C known to brighten uneven skin tone and lighten discolorations, especially when used in higher concentrations, typically 5% or greater. You get a good concentration of this ingredient, but that's about all, making this fragrance-free formula very much a one-note product. Still, it may be worth considering, we're not aware of any other product that offers this much ascorbyl glucoside.
Generally, we're not fans of one-note products because skin's needs are much more complex than what any single ingredient can provide, no matter how effective it is; however, this is an OK option if you wish to augment an already-great anti-aging skincare routine (meaning every other product you use is loaded with a mix of beneficial ingredients) with a stronger dose of a proven form of vitamin C.
The lightweight formula is packaged in a brown glass bottle with a dropper applicator.

Ascorbyl glucoside layers well, so it's easy to work into your routine, whether applied all over the face and neck or used as spot treatment for discolorations.
The Ordinary paired the ascorbyl glucoside with Propanediol, a synthetic penetration-enhancing ingredient that also provides nice slip and hydration.
Granted, Ascorbyl glucoside would be better if other important skincare ingredients were part of this formula, but for what The Ordinary is charging, we suspect not much more could've been added!
Ascorbyl Glucoside is a stabilized derivative of vitamin C.
Ascorbyl glucoside is readily soluble in water compared to ascorbic acid but doesn't oxidize or degrade like Ascorbic acid.
Ascorbyl Glucoside remains stable until it is applied to the skin - in the skin, Ascorbyl Glucoside
broken down by natural enzymes in a time-released manner; delivering youthful, healthier skin over a prolonged period of time.
Ascorbyl Glucoside gives all Vitamin C's bioactive characteristics in skin brightening, stimulation of collagen production, and antioxidant effects.
This water-soluble Vitamin C derivative inhibits tyrosinase thereby inducing skin lightening and prevents skin inflammation caused by harmful UV rays.
Ascorbyl Glucoside is preferred by most researchers because it is both bioavailable and bioactive, unlike other vitamin C derivatives.
Ascorbyl glucoside is able to able to exhibit superior efficacy in antioxidant activity, after-suncare, anti-inflammation, collagen synthesis, and in skin lightening.

USES:

Vitamin C has many studied benefits for the skin such as helping to diminish the visibility of pigmentation, support collagen production, may be involved in inflammation, reduce the sun’s effects on the skin, and maintain skin barrier integrity.
However, studies indicate that most forms of vitamin C, other than L-ascorbic acid don’t produce the same level of benefits to the skin.
This may include ascorbyl glucoside.
The benefits of vitamin C are discussed below, but keep in mind that these are considered to be benefits of L-ascorbic acid.
Ascorbyl glucoside is also considered to be gentler and a less potent form of vitamin C so it can be a great alternative if you have sensitive or irritated skin.
According to the manufacturer, ascorbyl glucoside functions as a time-release version of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), and therefore is more stable than traditional ascorbic acid.
Ascorbyl glucoside is considered to have skin-lightening and anti-hyperpigmentation properties, thanks to an ability to suppress melanin production.
Ascorbyl glucosides skinbrightening capacities are attributed to an apparent ability to reduce pre-existing melanin levels (as in the case of freckles or age spots).
Ascorbyl glucoside could also help promote collagen synthesis and help reduce skin inflammation.
Ascorbyl glucoside is found in antiaging, anti-wrinkle, and sun care products.

-Antioxidant:

Vitamin C is an antioxidant, which may help to reduce free radical damage.
Environmental factors such as radiation from the sun, UVA and UVB, pollution, smoking, and diet can put the skin in a state of oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress produces an imbalance in the levels of molecules called free radicals.
Free radicals can accumulate and create an imbalance.
This imbalance has been studied for its links with many diseases and its role in the aging process.
As an antioxidant, vitamin C is thought to reduce the effects of oxidative stress by neutralizing the free radical molecules and rebalancing their levels in the body.
This may also help to minimize the harmful damage caused by the sun.

-Collagen:

As we age, collagen production decreases. From age 20, the amount of collagen produced reduces by 1% per year.
Vitamin C acts as a cofactor or a helper molecule in the body’s natural collagen forming process.
Studies have looked at  L-ascorbic acid’s ability to crosslink and stabilize collagen fibers.
While several studies support vitamin C’s involvement in the processes that produce collagen, research is ongoing as to whether skincare products containing vitamin C have significant effects in improving visible firmness and elasticity of the skin.
This effect will also vary greatly depending on concentration, type of vitamin C, and frequency of use.
Pigmentation occurs on the surface of the skin for a multitude of internal and external reasons.
These can range from pregnancy or melasma, hormonal imbalance and sun damage to genetic predispositions, injury or inflammation.
Melanin is the molecule responsible for giving skin color or pigment, and the uneven production of melanin results in pigmentation areas on the surface.
Vitamin C may reduce the visibility of pigmentation through inhibition of the enzyme responsible for producing melanin in the skin.
Ascorbyl glucoside is crucial to use sunscreen alongside vitamin C products to avoid further pigmentation from the sun.

Inflammation:

Inflammation in the skin is common but some people experience it on a daily basis.
Conditions such as acne, psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema may cause the skin to be chronically inflamed.
Vitamin C is thought to inhibit a molecule that activates pro-inflammatory cytokines.
Cytokines are involved in immunity and help produce the inflammation reaction in the body to heal think of healthy wound healing.
In conditions where the skin is chronically inflamed, the cytokines react inappropriately, often working in overdrive.
Currently, topical vitamin C products are being examined for how it is involved in inflammation, wound healing and post-inflammatory linked pigmentation.

-Skin barrier integrity:

The skin barrier includes the outermost layers of the skin and is essential for maintaining a healthy, clear complexion.
Ascorbyl glucoside is responsible for protecting the skin’s deeper layers from damage, allergens, bacteria, and moisture loss.
When issues with the skin barrier occur, it may suggest conditions such as atopic dermatitis or eczema.
Vitamin C has been used in combination with other skincare ingredients and dermatological therapies to treat conditions that affect the skin barrier.
Vitamin C is thought to maintain the skin barrier by enhancing the ability of keratinocytes.
Keratinocytes are a type of skin cell that produces keratin.
Vitamin C may help to specialize the function of the keratinocyte.

BENEFITS:

Neutralizes skin-damaging free radicals, inhibits the production of pigment to fade and prevent dark spots, boosts collagen production.
At the end of the day, all types of vitamin C are antioxidant powerhouses, though the benefits definitely don't stop there.

-Fights free radicals:

Think of antioxidants, ascorbyl glucoside included, as little Pac-Men working to scavenge up pesky (and skin-damaging) free radicals that are formed when we're exposed to things such as UV rays and pollution.2 Antioxidants tend to have a synergistic effect when combined, which is why this ingredient works so well when paired with other commonly used antioxidants such as vitamin E or ferulic acid.

-Promotes brighter skin:

-Ascorbyl glucoside ultimately converts into l-ascorbic acid, which is a choice ingredient for both helping to fade existing dark marks and ward off the production of new ones by interfering in the melanin (color) production process in the skin.
"Because it inhibits melanin production, it can be useful when treating hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tones, and age spots," says Solomon.

-Boosts collagen production:

More collagen equals stronger, smoother, less-wrinkled skin and once ascorbyl glucoside breaks down into l-ascorbic acid it can do just that, stimulating the production of this essential protein.
There are some questions just how much of these benefits you can get when using it topically, though dermatologists agree that it's a generally great all-around anti-aging ingredient.

HOW TO USE IT:

Your best bet for exact usage will vary based from product to product and its intended purpose, notes Solomon.
As a general rule of thumb, you'll want to use it at least once a day.
The morning is a great time to do so, since all those antioxidant properties will act as a second layer of defense to back up your sunscreen: "Used under sunscreen it can help boost its UV protection," she adds.
Look for it in a serum, which will not only be concentrated with the ingredient to give you more bang for your buck, but will also be lightweight and easily layered under moisturizer and said sunscreen.
The Ordinary Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12% comes in a 30ml bottle and is applied with a pipette-style dropper.
Ascorbyl glucoside’s easy to use: you squeeze the rubber part of the pipette and then release it to dispense the required amount into your hand.
Best used as the first step in your morning routine after cleansing, you can gently rub the serum into your face or it can be pressed into the skin, starting with your cheeks and then your forehead and chin area.
Ascorbyl glucoside’s a lightweight formula but isn’t overly runny, and while it does feel a little bit tacky or sticky at first, that feeling soon dissipates.
Ascorbyl glucoside’s also best to wait between five and 10 minutes before applying other skincare on top; we recommend applying SPF and then makeup.
We also didn’t notice any issues with pilling when applying other products on top of it, which is a testament to the lightweight formula.

SIDE EFFECTS:

While pure vitamin C can sting and cause mild irritation, there aren't any side effects we know of with ascorbyl glucoside, says Nussbaum.
Still, it is an active ingredient for sure, so you can always test out a small amount elsewhere on your skin to make sure you can tolerate it.

SAFETY:

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel, a group responsible for evaluating the safety of skincare and cosmetic ingredients has reviewed the research on ascorbyl glucoside.
The Expert Panel concluded that ascorbyl glucoside is safe for its current uses and in the current concentrations in which it is used.

STORAGE:

Store away from oxidizing agents.
Store in a cool, dark and dry place.

PACKAGING:

When shopping for a new vitamin C serum, one of the most crucial things to look out for is the bottle.
Any good serum that’s worth buying will be housed in a dark-colored bottle, which is because formulas can become ineffective when they’re exposed to things like UV, light, and air.
Not all brands will choose to state that their packaging is UV-safe, but The Ordinary chooses to include that information on both the cardboard box and the bottle itself, which acts as extra added reassurance to customers.
The dark bottle not only protects the product inside it, but it also means that the formula will stay just as effective while you work your way through using it.
