BARQUAT DM 50

EC / List no.: 270-325-2
CAS no.: 68424-85-1

Barquat DM 50 Antimicrobial contains the active substance C12-C16 Alkyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (ADBAC).
The active is a cationic molecule offering good surfactant properties and can be formulated together with non-ionic and/or amphoteric surfactants.
Barquat DM 50 has a broad antimicrobial efficacy against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and enveloped viruses.
Barquat DM 50 maintains its efficacy across a broad pH-range.

Barquat DM 50 (also known as Benzalkonium Chloride) is a quaternary ammonium based antimicrobial used as a disinfectant, sanitizer, germicide, deodorant, fungicide and(or) algaecide.

Barquat DM 50 is a kind of cationic surfactant, belonging to nonoxidizing boicide.
Barquat DM 50 can efficiently withhold algae propagation and sludge reproduction.
Barquat DM 50 also has dispersing and penetrating properties, can penetrate and remove sludge and algae, has advantages of
low toxicity, no toxicity accumulation, soluble in water, convenient in use, unaffected by water hardness. Barquat DM 50
can be also used as anti-mildew agent, antistatic agent, emulsifying agent and amendment agent in woven and dyeing fields.

Barquat DM 50 (but also alkybenzyldimethylammonium chloride or ADBAC; CAS: 68424-85-1) refers to a mixture of alkybenzyldimethylammonium chlorides with carbon chains of varying length.
This molecule is a cationic surfactant of the quaternary ammonium family.

Barquat DM 50 dissolves readily in ethanol and acetone.
Although it is slowly soluble in water, aqueous solutions are easier to use and more widely used. Solutions should be neutral to slightly basic with a color from colorless to pale yellow.
The solutions foam strongly when shaken, have a bitter taste and an almond-like odor detectable only in the samples concerned.

As a result, applications are very varied, ranging from the formulation of disinfectants to the inhibition of microbial corrosion in petroleum or mineral oils.
Barquat DM 50is used in pharmaceutical products such as antiseptic skin solutions or wipes.
Barquat DM 50 is also used as a preservative in cosmetics such as eye and nose drops.

Finally, Barquat DM 50 is an allergen and some studies have cast doubt on its reputation as a safe compound.
Some products have been reformulated taking these studies into account, but it is still frequently used for washing the nose, hands, face, in mouthwashes, creams and other cleaning and disinfecting products.

Formulations/Preparations
The Barquat DM 50 chemical case is comprised of 24 compounds that are structurally similar quaternary ammonium compounds (quats) that are characterized by having a positively charged nitrogen covalently bonded to three alkyl group substituents and a benzyl substituent.
In finished form, these quats are salts with the positively charged nitrogen (cation) balanced by a negatively charged molecule (anion).
The most common anion for the quats in this cluster is chloride. However, other anions, such as saccharine and bromide are also used.
Formulation intermediate, aerosol, soluble concentrate/tablet, impregnated wipes, ready-to-use solution, wettable powder, pressurized liquid, and water-soluble packaging.

Barquat DM 50 functions:
Benzalkonium chloramine owns the broad spectrum, and is highly effective for sterilization and as an algicide, especially for killing sulfate-reducing bacteria.
Soluble in water, easy to use, not affected by water hardness, and giving a strong sticky-mud exfoliation.
Low toxicity and no toxic accumulation, unlike chlorine, which causes secondary pollution as it contains residual chlorine if used in water treatment.
Benzalkonium chloride can effectively control the growth of algal blooms and slime, better than chlorine.
Even in different ranges of PH value, Benzalkonium chloride has strong biocide ability. Barquat DM 50 can be used in bown acidic and alkaline conditions.
Barquat DM 50 can penetrate and remove slime and peel attached algae.
Barquat DM 50 also has the ability to clean and degrease oil.
Use of Barquat DM 50
As nonoxidizing boicide, dosage of 50-100mg/Lis preferred.
As sludge remover,200-300mg/L is preferred, an organosilyl antifoaming agent should be added for this purpose.
Barquat DM 50 can be used together with other fungicides such as isothiazolinones, glutaraldegyde, or dithionitrile methane for synergism.
Barquat DM 50 cannot be used together with chlorophenols.
If sewage appeara after using this product in circulating, cool water, the sewage should be filtered or blown off quickly, to prevent deposit in bottom of the collecting tank after the froth has dissipated.

Pharmacodynamics
Barquat DM 50 is a quaternary ammonium compound that demonstrates antimicrobial activity 1,5,4,6,7.
In particular, a high degree of microbiocidal activity in hard water is obtained with a blend of two quaternary ammonium chlorides or bromides where the quaternary ammonium cation of each quaternary component is alkyl dimethyl ethylbenzyl and wherein the the alkyl group in once case is C12 and in the other case is C14, with these compounds being present only within the range of 85/15 to 55/45 of the C12 compound relative to the C14 compound 6.

Quaternary ammonium compounds like Barquat DM 50 have subsequently shown antimicrobial activity against both gram positive and negative bacteria 1 as well as a certain extent of antifungal activity 2 and certain actions against particular virus types 3.

As a component of cleaning agents and disinfectants, topical exposure is largely the most common form of Barquat DM 50 exposure to humans. Regardless, when the agent is in contact with human skin, percutaneous absorption through intact skin is believed to be minimal, and so systemic effects from topical exposure is expected to be rare
