BAYFERROX Black 318 is a micronized iron oxide black pigment.

As a result of the manufacturing process (Laux-process), which includes a high temperature calcining step, BAYFERROX Black 318 has a higher intrinsic hardness than other precipitated pigments as well as outstanding heat stability. 
BAYFERROX Black 318 is very resistant to color change during high energy dispersion processes.

Pigments in powder form
Primarily for the colouring of construction materials. 
Their chemical structure makes them water insoluble, resistant to the alkalinity of cement and lime, acid resistant and stable to weathering.

Used in automotive coating, corrosion protection, decorative paints, floorings and emulsion paints. 
Bayferrox Black 318 is also suitable for industrial coatings, plastic coatings, roof tile coatings and wood coatings.

5. Properties: insoluble in water, alkaline solution and organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. 
Natural ferric oxide is insoluble in acid solution, and is easily oxidized to iron oxide (Fe2O3) in the air in a humid state. 
6. Uses: used as pigments and polishing agents, and can also be used in the manufacture of audio tapes and telecommunication equipment.

Solubility
Insoluble in water and organic solvents. Soluble in concentrated mineral acids.

Applications
Mostly it is used as a black- pigment -catalyst in the Haber process and in the water gas shift reaction. 
BAYFERROX Black 318 is used as a contrast-agent in MRI scanning, whereas it is used as a pigment in magnetic applications, polishing compounds, cosmetics, medicines, polymer, rubber, filler, building, construction, appliances, and magnetic inks.

BAYFERROX Black 318 can be used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the Fenton type oxidation of rhodamine B. 
BAYFERROX Black 318 can be used as an anode material for the fabrication of lithium-ion batteries. 
BAYFERROX Black 318 can also be utilized in the catalysis of the oxygen reduction reaction in the anion exchange membrane fuel cell.
Magnetite is used in biological studies for the development and evaluation of 90Y-labelled albumin microspheres loaded with magnetite nanoparticles for possible application in cancer therapy.


Nature
BAYFERROX Black 318 is a black powder, soluble in hot hydrochloric acid, insoluble in water and organic solvents. 
Cubic crystal structure, ferromagnetism. 
Than the saturation magnetization (a.) 105 riTrr13.g-l; Curie temperature (to) 585 deg C; Magnetostriction coefficient (A.) 18 x 10-6, magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant (Ki) -1.1 x 104 J/1113.


Standard
This product shall be calculated by burning to constant weight, and the content of Fe203 shall not be less than 96.0%.

Preparation Method
The divalent iron salt solution was added with NaOH solution, and the acicular iron yellow FeOOH was generated by air oxidation. 
The iron yellow was filtered, washed with water and dried. 
The dried iron oxide yellow is dehydrated by heat treatment at 270~300 ℃ and then calcined at 550 ℃ for 30min to obtain acicular iron red Fez 03 as an intermediate product. 
The acicular iron red is reduced by a reduction method (such as hydrogen reduction method and ethanol reduction method). 
BAYFERROX Black 318 was obtained as a needle-like Fe3 04 magnetic powder. 
After cooling to 80~100 ℃ under the protection of nitrogen, the oxidation of Fe3O4 magnetic powder with air for 2~3H was carried out to improve the oxidation stability.


Uses:
Used in audio tape, magnetic ink character recognition system. 
Needle-like Fe3 04 is often used as an intermediate product of BAYFERROX Black 318  magnetic powder.
