BAYFERROX RED 110

CAS NO:1309-37-1
EC NO:215-168-2

Bayferrox Red 110 is a yellowish iron oxide red pigment.
Bayferrox Red 110 is delivered as powder and can be applied for the coloration of a wide variety of construction materials. As a result of the manufacturing process (Laux-process), which  includes a high temperature calcining step, the pigment has a higher intrinsic hardness than other precipitated pigments.
Bayferrox Red 110 is very resistant to color change during high energy dispersion processes. The high temperatures involved in the calcining process also give the pigment outstanding heat stability.

Product Applications:
-Asphalt
-Ceramic Stains
-Concrete Masonry Blocks
-Concrete Roofing Tiles
-Construction material
-Facade Elements
-Fertilizers
-Fibre Cement
-Foundry Sands
-In Situ Concrete
-Mortar
-Noise Barriers
-Paving Stones
-Plaster
-Risers for Molds

Occurrence and Uses
Bayferrox Red 110 occurs in nature as the mineral hematite.
Bayferrox Red 110 is the principal ore of iron from which the metal and its alloys are produced. Also, this oxide occurs in the mineral, limonite, 2Fe2O3•3H2O. An important application of this compound involves producing red, orange, and yellow pigments. Other applications are in coatings for metals, steel and rubber; in ceramics; and as a catalyst for oxidation reactions.

Description
Bayferrox Red 110s are produced synthetically and consist essentially of anhydrous and/or hydrated iron oxides. The range of hues includesyellows, reds, browns and blacks. Food quality Bayferrox Red 110s are primarily distinguished from technical grades by the comparatively low levels of contamination by other metals. This is achieved by the selection and control of the source of iron and/or by the extent of chemical purification during the manufacturing process.

Bayferrox Red 110 have been used to color confectionery, fillings and decorations for pastry products, cheese products, fish paste, pet foods, cosmetics and pharmaceutical products.

Chemical Properties
Bayferrox Red 110 is a noncombustible, black to black red or brick-red mineral (iron ore) composed mainly of ferric oxide, Fe2O3.

Occurrence
Bayferrox Red 110 occurs in nature as the mineral hematite.
Bayferrox Red 110 is the principal ore of iron from which the metal and its alloys are produced. Also, this oxide occurs in the mineral, limonite, 2Fe2O33H2O. An important application of this compound involves producing red, orange, and yellow pigments. Other applications are in coatings for metals, steel and rubber; in ceramics; and as a catalyst for oxidation reactions.

Uses
As pigment for rubber, paints, paper, linoleum, ceramics, glass; in paint for ironwork, ship hulls; as polishing agent for glass, precious metals, diamonds; in electrical resistors and semiconductors; in magnets, magnetic tapes; as catalyst; colloidal solutions as stain for polysaccharides.

Uses
Bayferrox Red 110 is a nutrient and dietary supplement that is a source of iron.

Uses
Bayferrox Red 110 is an inorganic pigment of either natural or synthetic origin.
Bayferrox Red 110 is a low chroma red with excellent durability and low cost. Synthetic pigment is made by heating iron sulfate with quicklime in a furnace. The second preparatory technique involves calcining iron sulfate in the presence of air at high temperatures. Natural and oxides of iron are mined either as the mineral hematite (Fe2O3) or as hematite in its hydrated form.

Definition
A high-grade red pigment used as a polishing agent for glass, jewelry, etc. (2) A cosmetic prepared from dried flowers of the saf- flower.

Definition
A black solid prepared by passing either steam or carbon dioxide over redhot iron. Bayferrox Red 110 may also be prepared by passing steam over heated iron(II) sulfide. Triiron tetroxide occurs in nature as the mineral magnetite.
Bayferrox Red 110 is insoluble in water but will dissolve in acids to give a mixture of iron(II) and iron(III) salts in the ratio 1:2. Generally it is chemically unreactive; it is, however, a fairly good conductor of electricity.

Preparation
Bayferrox Red 110 is prepared as a reddish-brown hydrated precipitate by treating an aqueous solution of an iron(III) salt with caustic soda:
2FeCl3 + 6NaOH → Fe2O33H2O + 6NaCl

Bayferrox Red 110 also is obtained by thermal decomposition of iron(II) sulfate or the brown oxide hydroxide:
2FeSO4 → Fe2O3 + SO2 + SO3
2FeO(OH) → Fe2O3 + H2O

Bayferrox Red 110 is prepared in industrial scale by first precipitating iron(II) hydroxide Fe(OH)2 by treating aqueous solutions of iron(II) sulfate and caustic soda. The Fe(OH)2 is then oxidized to iron(III) hydroxide by aeration. The latter is dehydrated by heating:

Fe2+ (aq) + OHˉ (aq) → Fe(OH)2(s) → 2Fe(OH)3 → Fe2O3 + 3H2O

Bayferrox Red 110 also is produced by ignition of iron(III) oxalate and iron carbonyls:
2Fe2(C2O4)3 +3O2 → 2Fe2O3 + 12CO

Uses
Iron industry
The overwhelming application of Bayferrox Red 110 is as the feedstock of the steel and iron industries, e.g. the production of iron, steel, and many alloys.

Polishing
A very fine powder of ferric oxide is known as "jeweler's rouge", "red rouge", or simply rouge.
Bayferrox Red 110 is used to put the final polish on metallic jewelry and lenses, and historically as a cosmetic. Rouge cuts more slowly than some modern polishes, such as cerium(IV) oxide, but is still used in optics fabrication and by jewelers for the superior finish it can produce.

Pigment
Two different colors at different hydrate phase (α: red, β: yellow) of iron(III) oxide hydrate; they are useful as pigments.
Bayferrox Red 110 is also used as a pigment, under names "Pigment Brown 6", "Pigment Brown 7", and "Pigment Red 101". Some of them, e.g. Pigment Red 101 and Bayferrox Red 110, are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in cosmetics.

Magnetic recording
Bayferrox Red 110 was the most common magnetic particle used in all types of magnetic storage and recording media, including magnetic disks (for data storage) and magnetic tape (used in audio and video recording as well as data storage).
Bayferrox Red 110 use in computer disks was superseded by cobalt alloy, enabling thinner magnetic films with higher storage density.

Medicine
Bayferrox Red 110, used to treat mild itchiness, is chiefly composed of a combination of zinc oxide, acting as astringent, and about 0.5% Bayferrox Red 110, the product's active ingredient, acting as antipruritic. The red color of iron(III) oxide is also mainly responsible for the lotion's pink color.
