Behentrimonium Methosulfate sounds like a scary ingredient when you turn your favorite bottle of conditioner around and start reading.
When transitioning to natural hair, one of the first things you learn is the importance of ingredients in natural hair products.

The general rule of thumb used to be – if you can’t pronounce it, don’t use it in your hair.
Well, my friend, I’m here to tell you not all hard to pronounce ingredients are made the same and this is one of them.

In this article, we are going to break down the mystery behind this ingredient and why it might be your new best friend along your natural hair journey.

WHAT IS BEHENTRIMONIUM METHOSULFATE? WHAT IS IT MADE OF?
The scientific definition of Behentrimonium Methosulfate, also known as BMS, is a quaternary ammonium compound synthetically derived from the oil that comes from rapeseed.
Used in conditioners, shampoos, and lotions it also aids in providing extra slip in these products.

IS BEHENTRIMONIUM METHOSULFATE BAD FOR MY HAIR?
So the word “sulfate” has you concerned?
Trust me I understand.
Since the adoption of the Curly Girl Method, many naturals began to run far away from any type of sulfate to avoid the risk of damaging their curls.

But, one thing you have to understand is that not all sulfates are created equal.
BMS is plant-derived so many have said it is not a cause for concern in natural hair products.
It does not cause build-up and is said to be non-irritating.

IS IT TOXIC?
According to Natural Well Being, it is considered the perfect ingredient of shampoos and hair conditioning products since it has the ability to moisturize and condition hair to the roots.
Behentrimonium Methosulfate has the ability to penetrate up to the hair shaft making hair healthier and thus easy to comb and maintain

Some have commented BMS possibly being an endocrine disruptor but, I have no scientific research to confirm or dispute.
I encourage you to do further research.
In fact, BMS is one of the few beauty ingredients approved by the European Union, which bans way more cosmetics than the U.S.

Why Use Behentrimonium Methosulfate for Hair?
What is Behentrimonium Methosulfate (BTMS)?
Who would have thought that a chemical compound with a hard-to-pronounce name like “behentrimonium methosulfate” could be used as a powerful hair detangler that’s easy on the scalp and gentle on the skin?

Behentrimonium methosulfate is a type of ammonium salt that’s derived from the oil of a natural plant called Colza, aka rapeseed.
Behentrimonium Methosulfate acts as a mild emulsifier and conditioning agent for hair products such as shampoos, conditioners, creams, and lotions.
Even better, it doesn’t cause buildup in the hair, and it’s non-irritating to the scalp.

Behentrimonium Methosulfate for Hair
Behentrimonium Methosulfate as a Detangling Conditioner
Even though behentrimonium methosulfate sounds “fierce,” it’s actually quite mild and is frequently used in leave-in conditioners and detangling sprays.
If you have unruly hair that’s prone to tangles, then you know how important it is to use products that can help you work the knots out gently without causing you to rip and break your hair off in the process.

The less trauma your hair experiences when you comb it out wet, the healthier it will be overall.
That’s where behentrimonium methosulfate comes in. Hair conditioners that include BTMS offer improved functionality when combing out wet hair and leave it feeling smoother and slicker.

Anti-Static Electricity Control
Behentrimonium methosulfate is a cationic surfactant (an ingredient used in fabric softeners and antimicrobial agents), and a popular ingredient in cleansing shampoos. Behentrimonium Methosulfate also works great at controlling static electricity in the hair.

To explain it in simple terms: BTMS has a positive charge and a long carbon tail, which means it’s attracted to the negative charges in your hair’s atoms.
When these electrical charges come in contact with one another, they balance each other out and flatten the cuticle layers of the hair.

This action helps make behentrimonium methosulfate an effective anti-static agent.

Reduces Frizz and Protects Against Humidity
Whenever available, choose serums or leave-in conditioners that include BTMS.
When your hair’s cuticles lay flat, as is what happens after using products with behentrimonium methosulfate, your hair appears less frizzy.

Behentrimonium methosulfate also coats the hair shafts, which helps the hair retain its natural moisture while blocking external humidity from passing through the cuticle; thus, reducing the dreaded frizzies.

Is Behentrimonium Methosulfate Dangerous?
Behentrimonium methosulfate is not known to be dangerous, but people who have known allergies to quaternary ammonium compounds should avoid using products that contain it.

Also, certain quaternary ammonium compounds can interfere with the body’s endocrine system, so if you have a history of acute chemical sensitivities, it’s recommended that you consult with a medical physician before using products that contain BTMS.

Setting The Record Straight About BTMS and Why We Use It
Ingredient transparency seems to be the new trend or consumer demand nowadays.
Everyone wants to know exactly what they are putting into their bodies and on their skin.
Behentrimonium Methosulfate as well subscribe to that very same thought process.
In addition to being a business owner, I’m also a consumer; and as a consumer, I want to be assured that the products I’m using are beneficial as well as safe.
The latter ideology is what ultimately led to the creation of my natural, made in Australia company, “From Earth”.
Behentrimonium Methosulfate wanted all who would use my products to be certain that they were getting natural, organic and eco-friendly ingredients.
That mission is still the same today.
In the spirit of transparency, I would like to take a moment and ease your mind of any doubts about some of the ingredients you may see listed on our products.
What Is BTMS?
It dawned on me that some of the ingredients we use here at From Earth may seem a bit daunting.
A few of our ingredients have those 12 syllable chemical like words that no one wants to pronounce.
One ingredient, in particular, is Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and Cetearyl Alcohol), or for short BTMS.
Behentrimonium Methosulfate in layman terms is simply a type of emulsifying wax.
When making our natural conditioner or conditioner bar, emulsification is vital.
When mixing oils with other liquids such as water, BTMS allows the ingredients to mix or emulsify without separating.
As a result of using BTMS, we are able to create your creamy, natural conditioner that you love so much.
Where Does BTMS Come From?
As many of you know, we make it our duty at From Earth to always give you products that are natural, organic and if possible made in Australia.
Despite the way the name looks, BTMS is actually derived from a plant.
It is a plant-based emulsifying wax that is naturally derived from Colza or Rapeseed oil.
Behentrimonium Methosulfate is sometimes listed as BTMS-25 or BTMS-50.
The difference between the two is their level of potency.
BTMS-25 contains 25% of the active ingredient Behentrimonium Methosulfate (derived from Colza plant), while BTMS-50 contains 50%.

Why Do We Use BTMS In Our Products?
As mentioned previously, BTMS acts as a wonderful emulsifier when mixing several different ingredients.
In addition to its emulsifying capabilities, it’s also a great detangling agent and absorbs well into skin and hair strands.
Behentrimonium Methosulfate has a positive charge which makes it super conditioning.
When it’s used in products like our eco-friendly, Australian made conditioner bar it gives your hair and skin a silky and moisturized feel.
We Vow to Always be Natural and Australian Made
Now, that I’ve explained what exactly BTMS is and why we use it, I hope that you are a bit more at ease and assured that all of our ingredients are in fact what we say they are.
Our products are and always will be organic, sustainable, and Australian made.

Behentrimonium methosulfate comes from rapeseed (canola) oil
Behentrimonium Methosulfate is often used in shampoo and conditioners to create a smooth, slippery feel.
This gentle ingredient is an effective conditioner and detangler, as it soaks easily into the hair and doesn’t leave buildup at the roots.

Behentrimonium Methosulfate 50% is a quaternary ammonium compound used in conditioners, shampoos, and lotions to impart a slippery feel to the product.

BTMS - BEHENTRIMONIUM METHOSULFATE -
is a cationic quaternary ammonium salt derived from the Behenyl fatty acid that is prevalent in rapeseed oil (the plant for canola oil /colza Oil).
As carbon chain lengths have a direct bearing on the efficacy of the conditioner we can generalise that the longer carbon chain (C22), - the better the de-tangling properties on the hair and lubrication of the skin.
Behentrimonium Methosulfate also relates to the reduction in the electrostatic charge, which reduces the chances of flyaway hair.

BTMS offers “variable” conditioning, allowing formulators to customise their product’s conditioning effects for skin and hair.
BTMS forms stable cationic emulsions, allowing formulators to produce creams and lotions that have a soft, powdery after-feel, yet it is safe and gentle enough for skin care.
BTMS is also a highly effective hair detangler due to the long behenyl (C22) chain and is preferred by panellists in salon evaluations over industry benchmarks.

BMTS will improve hair's texture and controls static, but on its own it can be difficult to process.
Adding a fatty alcohol like cetyl alcohol or cetearyl alcohol will help with making it easier to process and at same time help with lubricity and thus reduce the combing forces for wet and dry hair and reduces the friction between strands of hair.

BTMS is an excellent suspending agent, providing  sufficient viscosity, making the use of auxiliary thickeners unnecessary in your formulations.
A unique property of BTMS is its ability to emulsify high levels (up to 50%) of silicone.
BTMS contains 26% active conditioning agents.

Promotes a silky and easy manageable texture to our hair care products.
Penetrates the hair deeply and conditions thoroughly, this ingredient detangles the hair and leaves the hair hydrated.

Incroquat™ Behenyl is a quaternary conditioning agent and emulsifier based on a C22 long chain fatty moiety, making it tremendously effective as a detangler for hair, yet safe and gentle for leave-on skin care products.
Incroquat™ Behenyl TMS is exceptionally mild and produces elegant cationic emulsions that are substantive to skin and hair.
These emulsions provide a soft powdery persistent after feel on the skin and leave hair silky, smooth and tangle-free.

Behentrimonium methosulphate is an ammonium salt compound, usually appearing as a white waxy solid, derived from rapeseed oil.
Despite its name, it shouldn't be confused with other ‘nasty’ sulfates like sodium lauryl sulfate.

Behentrimonium methosulphate can be used in hair care products for its gentle yet effective conditioning and antistatic properties.
Behentrimonium Methosulfate cationic (positively charged) agents bind this ingredient to hair cuticles, helping to leave hair soft and smooth without buildup.

Behentrimonium Methosulfate is used as an antistatic agent, antibacterial agent, hair conditioner, and surfactant in cosmetics.

BTMS 50 has an excellent thickening effect, and brings significant thickness to the emulsified formula paste.
It is more hydrophobic in nature, and it is easier to deposit positive cationic terminals and lipids on the hair than conventional C18 quaternary ammonium salts, thereby providing better conditioning performance.
At the same time, the hydrophobicity and deposition behavior of BTMS make the product have excellent dry hair combing properties, without the need to deposit with other polymer quaternary ammonium compounds, but also excellent conditioning properties, and the formulation application is convenient.
