In terms of chemical composition, benzyl alcohol is classified as aromatic alcohol of the simplest benzene group. It is a colorless liquid with a faint pleasant odor. It dissolves well in organic solvents.

The use of benzyl alcohol is widespread in the industrial production of varnishes and paints. It is also well known as an E1519 additive in the cosmetic industry, and due to its antiseptic properties it is also used in pharmaceuticals in the production of oil solutions for disinfection and as a preservative.
