CHEMICAL PROPERTIES of BENZYL ALCOHOL BENZOIC ESTER:
Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester is the main component of Peru balsam oil.
Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester occurs in fairly large amounts in a number of blossom concretes and absolutes (e.g., tuberose and hyacinth).

Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester forms either a viscous liquid or solid flakes (mp 21–22°C) and has a weak, sweet, balsamic odor.
Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester is prepared either by transesterification of technical methyl benzoate with benzyl alcohol or from benzyl chloride and sodium benzoate.

A third process starts with benzaldehyde, which is converted in high yield into benzyl benzoate in the presence of sodium or aluminum benzylate (Tishchenko reaction).
Benzyl benzoate is used in perfumery as a fixative and as a modifier in heavy blossom fragrances.

PRODUCTION METHODS of BENZYL ALCOHOL BENZOIC ESTER:
Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester is produced by the Cannizzaro reaction from benzaldehyde, by esterifying benzyl alcohol with benzoic acid, or by treating sodium benzoate with benzyl chloride.

Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester is purified by distillation and crystallization.
Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester is used as a fixative and solvent for musk in perfumes and flavors, as a plasticizer, miticide, and in some external medications.

Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester has been found effective in the treatment of scabies and pediculosis capitis (head lice, Pediculus humanus var. capitis).

Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester is a constituent of Peru balsam and occurs naturally in certain plant species.
Commercially, Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester is produced synthetically by the dry esterification of sodium benzoate and benzoyl chloride in the presence of triethylamine or by the reaction of sodium benzylate with benzaldehyde.

Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester was obtained by transesterification of ethyl benzoate with benzyl alcohol, washed with water, layered, dried and distilled.
Alternatively, Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester is prepared by condensation of benzaldehyde.

Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester is produced industrially by the reaction of sodium benzoate with benzyl chloride in the presence of a base, or by transesterification of methyl benzoate and benzyl alcohol.

Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester is a byproduct of benzoic acid synthesis by toluene oxidation.
Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester can also be synthesized by the Tishchenko reaction, using benzaldehyde with sodium benzyloxide (generated from sodium and benzyl alcohol) as catalyst.

Three grams (0.13 atom) of metallic sodium is dissolved by warming for one-half hour in 70 g. (0.65 mole) of pure benzyl alcohol, and after the mixture has cooled to room temperature the solution is added gradually, with thorough mixing, to 454 g. (4.3 moles) of c.p. benzaldehyde (which must contain less than 1 per cent of benzoic acid).

The reaction mixture has a tendency to become warm, but the temperature should be kept slightly below 50–60° by cooling, if necessary.
A pasty gelatinous mass results.

After about one-half hour the temperature of the mixture no longer rises; it is then warmed on the water bath for about one or two hours, with occasional shaking.

The cooled reaction product is treated with 200 cc. of water (Note 5), the layer of oil separated, washed once with a second portion of water, and subjected to distillation under reduced pressure.

The first fraction of the distillate contains benzyl alcohol together with unchanged aldehyde, as well as a small quantity of water.
The temperature then rises rapidly to the boiling point of benzyl benzoate, when the receiver is changed.

The product boils at 184–185° /15 mm., and analysis by saponification shows it to consist of 99 per cent ester.
The yield is 410–420 g. (90–93 per cent of the theoretical amount).

This benzyl benzoate supercools readily, but after solidifying melts within one degree of the highest recorded value (19.4°) and therefore need not be refractionated, unless material of exceptional purity is required.

Benzyl alcohol benzoic ester can be prepared by the action of benzyl chloride on sodium benzoate, even in aqueous solution, and by the action of alkoxides on benzaldehyde.

The sodium alkoxide method, used in the procedure described, is most convenient and practical.
Unfortunately, it has been found to be extremely erratic in regard to yield (10–95 per cent), as well as in regard to the purity of the product (87–97 per cent ester).

As a result of the present study, causes for variations are accounted for and the procedure has been converted into a satisfactory method of preparation.
