A slow-evaporating, hydrophilic glycol ether with excellent coalescing and coupling power that offers strong solvency and chemical stability for a broad array of household products. 
Butyl CARBITOL Solvent has a vapor pressure that qualifies it as an exempt VOC (volatile organic compound) under the California Air Resources Board and U.S. EPA criteria for both consumer and commercial cleaning product applications. Other functional characteristics include, readily biodegradable and US EPA Inerts listed for non food use.

Butyl CARBITOL Solvent by Dow Chemical is a diethylene glycol monobutyl ether. Acts as a slow-evaporating, hydrophilic glycol based solvent. Used as latex coalescent in water-based architectural and industrial coatings, primary solvent in solvent-based silk screen printing inks, coupling solvent for resins and dyes in water-based printing inks, solvent for ball point and felt tip pen inks, and textile dyeing and printing.

Butyl CARBITOL Solvent can be considered a slower-evaporating analog of Butyl CELLOSOLVE glycol ether. 
Butyl CARBITOL Solvent can be used in combination with Butyl CELLOSOLVE glycol ether to lower the evaporation rate and increase the hydrophobicity of the solvent package. In addition, Butyl CARBITOL glycol ether offers 100% water solubility.

Production and Use
Butyl CARBITOL Solvent is produced by the reaction of ethylene oxide and n-butanol with an alkalic catalyst.

In pesticide products, Butyl CARBITOL Solvent acts as an inert ingredient as a deactivator for formulation before the crop emerges from the soil and as a stabilizer. 
Butyl CARBITOL Solvent is also a chemical intermediate for the synthesis of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether acetate, diethylene glycol dibutyl ether, and piperonyl acetate, and as a solvent in high baked enamels. 

Other applications of Butyl CARBITOL Solvent are as a dispersant for vinyl chloride resins in organosols, a diluent for hydraulic brake fluids, and a mutual solvent for soap, oil, and water in household cleaners. The textile industry uses Butyl CARBITOL Solvent as a wetting-out solution. 
Butyl CARBITOL Solvent is also a solvent for nitrocellulose, oils, dyes, gums, soaps, and polymers. 
Butyl CARBITOL Solvent is also used as coupling solvent in liquid cleaners, cutting fluids, and textile auxiliaries. 
In the printing industry, Butyl CARBITOL Solvent applications include: solvent in lacquers, paints, and printing inks; high boiling point solvent to improve gloss and flow properties; and used as a solubilizer in mineral oil products.

Butyl CARBITOL Solvent is a colorless, high-boiling liquid with a mild odour. 
Butyl CARBITOL Solvent is miscible in proportions with water, alcohol (methanol), ketones (acetone), ethers (ethyl ether), aromatic hydrocarbons (benzene), paraffinic hydrocarbons (n-heptane), and halogenated hydrocarbons (carbon tetrachloride). As it is an ether-alcohol type compound it possesses solvent action for many substances such as oils, dyes, gums, and natural and synthetic resins. 
Butyl CARBITOL Solvent is used as a high-boiling solvent in nitrocellulose lacquers and other synthetic coatings, baking lacquers, flash-dry printing inks, and dye bath.

Uses    
Butyl CARBITOL Solvent is widely used as a solvent for cellulose ester, lacquers, varnishes, cleaners, detergents, dyes, ink, and paint industries. it is also used as an intermediate for plasticizers and a diluent for hydraulic brake fluids, in addition to the production of piperonyl butoxy compounds. In France, its use in the cosmetics industry is permissible, wherein it is used as a solvent in hair dyes with a maximum concentration of 9%.
