WHAT IS C10-18 TRIGLYCERIDES AND WHAT IS C10-18 TRIGLYCERIDES'S PURPOSE?
In the realm of skin and hair care, the term I.N.C.I. "C10-18 Triglycerides" is nothing more than an emollient agent that softens cosmetic formulas during their application.
Approved for organic use, C10-18 Triglycerides are present in certain Typology treatments.

C10-18 TRIGLYCERIDES: WHAT EXACTLY ARE THEY?
This pertains to saturated fatty acid triglycerides.
From a chemical perspective, C10-18 Triglycerides are glycerides in which the three hydroxyl groups of glycerol are esterified by fatty acids (molecules composed of a long chain of carbon atoms).

Triglycerides are lipids, in other words, fatty substances.
They can be found in animal fats, and dairy products, but also in vegetable oils.

The "C10-18 Triglycerides" present in certain skin and hair care products are generally derived from a vegetable oil, such as olive, palm, etc...
In cosmetics, the "C10-18 Triglycerides" are primarily used for three functions:

*Emollient:
C10-18 Triglycerides make formulas pleasant to the touch and soft upon application, facilitating their deposition on the skin, mucous membranes such as the lips, or even the hair.

*Skin Care Agent:
C10-18 Triglycerides strengthen the hydrolipidic film present on the surface of the epidermis, limiting dehydration and protecting the skin from external aggressions.

*Solvent:
C10-18 Triglycerides are purely functional and is not associated with any specific benefits for the skin and/or hair.
However, it is sometimes important to add a good solvent to a formula to facilitate the dispersion of other substances and/or promote the stability of C10-18 Triglycerides.

HOW TO WORK WITH C10-18 TRIGLYCERIDES:
Include C10-18 Triglycerides in the heated oil phase of your formulations.
C10-18 Triglycerides need to be melted.
Try swapping a different fatty thickener (cetyl, stearic, cetearyl) in a lotion/cream formula you already love with  C10-18 Triglycerides

STORAGE AND SHELF LIFE OF C10-18 TRIGLYCERIDES:
Stored somewhere cool, dark, and dry, C10-18 Triglycerides should last at least two years.

WHY DO WE USE C10-18 TRIGLYCERIDES IN FORMULATIONS?
C10-18 Triglycerides are included in formulations to make them feel richer, to boost viscosity, to harden/solidify, and to improve stability.
C10-18 Triglycerides are a good way to make a product solid and rich while maintaining good slip.

DO YOU NEED C10-18 TRIGLYCERIDES?
No, but I sure like C10-18 Triglycerides!

REFINED OR UNREFINED, C10-18 TRIGLYCERIDES:
C10-18 Triglycerides only exist as a refined ingredient.

STRENGHTS OF C10-18 TRIGLYCERIDES:
Rich, creamy thickening with beautiful skin feel.
C10-18 Triglycerides are very versatile.

WEAKNESSES OF C10-18 TRIGLYCERIDES:
Harder to find than other fatty thickeners, like cetearyl alcohol and stearic acid.

ALTERNATIVES AND SUBSTITUTIONS OF C10-18 TRIGLYCERIDES:
I’d try a blend of cetearyl alcohol and stearic acid; probably 70% cetearyl alcohol and 30% stearic acid?
You’ll have to test it yourself and see what works for the particular formulation you’re using.
A pseudo wax, made from hydrogenated oils, could potentially work.
I do not recommend using a true wax, like beeswax or candelilla wax, instead of C10-18 Triglycerides.

INFORMATION ABOUT C10-18 TRIGLYCERIDES:
Glycerides are conversion products of glycerin (esters), which are obtained through a reaction with fats (through so-called trans-esterification) or through direct esterification with one or more fatty acid(s) (mono-, di- or triglycerides).
