C12-16- ALKYLDIMETHYLBENZYLAMMONIUM CHLORIDE

EC / List no.: 270-325-2
CAS no.: 68424-85-1
Mol. formula: (CH2)11,13C10H16ClN

C12-16-alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride (but also alky benzyl dimethylammonium chloride or ADBAC; CAS: 68424-85-1) refers to a mixture of alkybenzyldimethylammonium chlorides with carbon chains of varying length.
This molecule is a cationic surfactant of the quaternary ammonium family.

C12-16-alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride dissolves readily in ethanol and acetone.
Although it is slowly soluble in water, aqueous solutions are easier to use and more widely used. Solutions should be neutral to slightly basic with a color from colorless to pale yellow.
The solutions foam strongly when shaken, have a bitter taste and an almond-like odor detectable only in the samples concerned.

As a result, applications are very varied, ranging from the formulation of disinfectants to the inhibition of microbial corrosion in petroleum or mineral oils.
C12-16-alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride is used in pharmaceutical products such as antiseptic skin solutions or wipes.
Benzalkonium chloride is also used as a preservative in cosmetics such as eye and nose drops.

Finally, benzalkonium chloride is an allergen and some studies have cast doubt on its reputation as a safe compound.
Some products have been reformulated taking these studies into account, but it is still frequently used for washing the nose, hands, face, in mouthwashes, creams and other cleaning and disinfecting products.

C12-16-alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride is readily soluble in ethanol, IPA,and acetone.
Although dissolution in water is slow, aqueous solutions are easier to handle and are preferred.
Solutions should be neutral to slightly alkaline, with colours ranging from colourless to a pale yellow.
Solutions foam profusely when shaken.
