C16-C18 ALCOHOLS

CAS:    68155-00-0
MF:    C17H34
MW:    238.45186
EINECS:    268-930-1

Mixture of C16-C18 alcohols usually with the following C16/C18 ratios 30/70 and 50/50.
Obtained from palm oil C16-C18 alcohols by esterification and catalytic hydrogenation.
Classified as a long chain alcohol is a white solid below 48-54 ºC.
Industrial uses: pH regulators and water treatment products, coating products, metal surface treatment products, laboratory chemicals, polymers and washing & cleaning products
Cosmetic uses: Emulsion stabilizing, opacifying, skin conditioning-emollient, surfactant-cleansing, surfactant-emulsifying, surfactant-foam boosting, viscosity controlling.
C16-C18 alcohols (or long-chain alcohols) are usually high-molecular-weight, straight-chain primary alcohols, but can also range from as few as 4–6 carbons to as many as 22–26, derived from natural fats and oils.
The precise chain length varies with the source.
Some commercially important fatty alcohols are lauryl, stearyl, and oleyl alcohols.
They are colourless oily liquids (for smaller carbon numbers) or waxy solids, although impure samples may appear yellow.
C16-C18 alcohols usually have an even number of carbon atoms and a single alcohol group (–OH) attached to the terminal carbon.
Some are unsaturated and some are branched.
They are widely used in industry.
As with C16-C18 alcohols, they are often referred to generically by the number of carbon atoms in the molecule, such as "a C12 alcohol", that is an alcohol having 12 carbons, for example dodecanol.

Article service life
Other release to the environment of C16-C18 alcohols is likely to occur from: indoor use in long-life materials with low release rate (e.g. flooring, furniture, toys, construction materials, curtains, foot-wear, leather products, paper and cardboard products, electronic equipment), outdoor use in long-life materials with low release rate (e.g. metal, wooden and plastic construction and building materials), outdoor use in long-life materials with high release rate (e.g. tyres, treated wooden products, treated textile and fabric, brake pads in trucks or cars, sanding of buildings (bridges, facades) or vehicles (ships)) and indoor use in long-life materials with high release rate (e.g. release from fabrics, textiles during washing, removal of indoor paints).
C16-C18 alcohols can be found in complex articles, with no release intended: vehicles and machinery, mechanical appliances and electrical/electronic products (e.g. computers, cameras, lamps, refrigerators, washing machines).
C16-C18 alcohols can be found in products with material based on: fabrics, textiles and apparel (e.g. clothing, mattress, curtains or carpets, textile toys) and leather (e.g. gloves, shoes, purses, furniture).
C16-C18 alcohols is intended to be released from scented: clothes.

Product advantages:
1-very good emulsifying, low foaming and lubricating properties,
2-compatibility with other non-ionic and anionic surfactants and other formulation components,
3-very good solubility in acetone, ethanol, naphthenic and paraffin oil, as well as rapeseed oil and rapeseed oil methyl esters,
4-biodegradable product,
5-C16-C18 alcohols is not classified according to the CLP/GHS Regulation.

C16-C18 alcohols is widely used in steroid creams, emollients and cosmetics.
Sometimes only one of the stereoisomers is used.
C16-C18 alcohols is a component of emulsifying wax and therefore found in emulsifying ointment and aqueous cream BP.
C16-C18 alcohols is used to help soften the skin and hair and to thicken and stabilize cosmetic products, like lotions and hair products.
As an emollient, C16-C18 alcohols is considered an effective ingredient for soothing and healing dry skin.
Products with cetearyl alcohol: skin lotions, moisturizers, skin creams, sunscreen, shampoo, conditioners, hair removal creams, hair mousse, anti-frizz hair cream, hair dye, mascar.
