CAB-O-SIL M-5 untreated fumed silica is a synthetic, amorphous, colloidal silicon dioxide that is generally regarded as unique in industry because of its unusual particle characteristics.
CAB-O-SIL M-5’s extremely small particle size, its enormous surface area, its high purity, and its chain-forming tendencies set it apart in a class of its own.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is a light, fluffy powder that is white in appearance and is used in many applications and a variety of industries.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is is a medium surface fumed silica used in adhesives.

CAB-O-SIL M-5 provides thickening, thixotrophic (shear thinning), and anti-settling behavior in liquid systems.
To perform one or more important functions in Cabosil coatings, CAB-O-SIL M-5 is a versatile and effective combusted silica used.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is formed as a result of hydrolysis in an oxygen flame at approximately 1800C.
This process is high purity and forms a fine particle size colloidal product.
Uncommon surface chemistry of fumed silica in coating systems plays an important role.

About 40% of the surface of untreated fumed silica is hydroxyl groups.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is covered with water and therefore its surface is hydrophilic.
Hydroxyl groups of surface chemistry provides its distinctive feature.
When fumed silica is added to the liquid mixture, the hydroxyl on the neighboring silica particles forms hydrogen bonds with groups.
Formation of merging hydrogen bonds CAB-O-SIL M-5 provides rheological control of silica in liquid systems.

CAB-O-SIL M-5 is a untreated medium surface fumed silica that provides thickening, thixotrophic, and anti-settling behavior in liquid systems.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is most efficient in non-polar to medium polarity systems, and provides increases in hardness, tensile strength and elongation.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 can be used for reinforcement of silicone and organic rubbers.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is well suited for use in coatings, adhesives, and other liquid systems.

CAB-O-SIL M-5 is a medium surface fumed silica which imparts significant increase in viscosity in liquid systems, free flow of powders and reinforcement of silicone and organic rubbers.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is medium surface fumed silica.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is widely used to provide thickening, thixotrophic (shear thinning), and anti-settling behavior in liquid systems.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is most efficient in non-polar to medium polarity systems. Offers an excellent balance of thickening efficiency and dispersibility. Exhibits high purity, aggregated structure, submicron particle size, low bulk density and hydrophilic surface chemistry.
When blended into sticky and poorly flowing powder systems, CAB-O-SIL M-5 reduces the angle of repose and improves powder flow.

CAB-O-SIL M-5 adheres readily to hydrophilic ingredients, functioning as an excellent glidant.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 fumed silica in a tablet formulation can decrease the coefficient of variation of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) content in a batch of tablets.

Very low variations in drug content were observed with APAP tablet formulations containing 0.5% CAB-O-SIL M-5P fumed silica after blending for 15 minutes. ,
Tablets without fumed silica mixed for 15 minutes exhibited a coefficient of variation of 6%, which is 12 times higher than the variation seen in tablets that did contain CAB-O-SIL fumed silica.

CAB-O-SIL M-5 extends the product’s shelf life and maintains its characteristics during storage.

Due to its excellent hydrophobicity, CAB-O-SIL M-5 offers great storage stability and an extended product shelf life.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is an excellent choice for use in reactive/moisture curing systems such as isocyanate or silane.
In addition to being moisture resistant, CAB-O-SIL M-5 provides excellent corrosion resistance while remaining process-friendly
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is used for reinforcement of silicone compounds and organic polymers.
Cabot fumed silica strengthens rubber, allowing it to be stretched and deformed without breaking.

CAB-O-SIL M-5 increases ink viscosity, provides thixotropy, prevents its absorption in very porous surfaces, prevents sagging and curing during application and also prevents the settling in heavy loads, such as for pigments.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 increases polyester/gelcoat resin viscosity, provides thixotropy and prevents sagging primarily during application on vertical surfaces.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 also prevents load sedimentation in formulations with heavy elements or in large concentrations.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 promotes the free-flow of the formulation’s powdered components and increases tablets’ mechanical resistance through direct compression.
This increases the productivity of the pharmaceutical industry, thus creating more accurate dosages and reducing loss rates from tablet breakage during pressing.

In liquid systems (syrups, etc.), CAB-O-SIL M-5 improves the uniform distribution of the active ingredients, enhances system viscosity and prevents the sedimentation of formulation components.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is the most versatile fumed silica for the cosmetics and personal care sector, including hair products, antiperspirants, nail polishes, make-up, creams, lotions, lipsticks, etc.
This versatility is due to its high purity and amorphous structure which provides excellent performance in liquid and powder systems in several applications.
Among the CAB-O-SIL M-5, there are two different families: hydrophilic silicas (with a surface area ranging from 90 to 380 m²/g) and hydrophobic silicas, such as the TS 610, TS 720 and TS 530.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is an excellent agent for keeping oil/water emulsions stable.

Due to its high water polarity, optimal performance is ideally achieved if you first add CAB-O-SIL fumed silica in the oily phase.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 fumed silica provides excellent flow for fire-fighting equipment by preventing any agglomeration, even after long storage time.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 is widely used to provide thickening, thixotrophic (shear-thinning), and anti-settling behavior in liquid systems.

FEATURES:

CAB-O-SIL M-5 has been successfully used as a special additive material in many different industries.
Increases the "fluidity" and "anti-caking" properties of powdered materials.
CAB-O-SIL M-5 keeps the dispersed solids in suspension and prevents them from collapsing.

PURITY:

CAB-O-SIL M-5 is produced through a pyrogenic process that results in one of the purest commercially available forms of synthetic amorphous silica (99.8% pure).
In contrast, the production of precipitated silica requires the addition of a mineral acid to an alkaline silicate solution, resulting in a lower purity product that contains higher moisture, sulfates and chloride impurities.
These impurities can impact the product in significant ways, including:

-High sulfates and chloride content can affect the stability of some active ingredients.
-Fumed silica has a much lower level of ionic chlorides than precipitated silica and very low to no ionic sulfate species as there are no sulfur containing species in the pyrogenic process.
-High levels of moisture can affect moisture-sensitive compounds.
-Fumed silica has a lower level of moisture than precipitated silica.

-CAB-O-SIL M-5 as a die filling aid:

Uniform tablet weights and uniform doses of active ingredients are dependent on the ability of the powder mix to feed into the dies in a reproducible manner.
Fumed silica can be added to the formulation in order to improve the flow properties of the material and to aid particle rearrangement within the die during the early stages of die filling and compression.
