MF:    C19H42ClN
MW:    320
EINECS:    203-928-6

General Description
Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride is a liquid quaternary ammonium salt, typically purchased as an aqueous solution with approximately 30% concentration.
Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride functions as a conditioning agent and surfactant in our products.
Clear water-like liquid.
Colorless to pale yellow liquid with an odor of rubbing alcohol.
Floats or sinks in water.
The organic chloride salt of cetyltrimethylammoniumer.
Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride is used as a topical antiseptic, and may be found in many household products such as shampoos and cosmetics.
Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride, also known as Cetrimonium bromide, is an amine based cationic quaternary surfactant used as an antiseptic agent against fungi and bacteria, and as a buffer solution for the extraction of DNA.
Ungraded products supplied by Spectrum are indicative of a grade suitable for general industrial use or research purposes and typically are not suitable for human consumption or therapeutic use.

Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride can be incorporated into a cosmetic preparation for any number of formulatory needs including as an anti-static, an emulsifier, and a surfactant.
Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride can also be used as a preservative and anti-microbial against the proliferation of bacteria, fungi, and yeast.
Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride, is a topical antiseptic and surfactant.
Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride is also commonly used in hair conditioners and shampoos, as a conditioning agent.
Long-chain quaternary ammonium surfactants, such as Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride, are generally combined with long-chain fatty alcohols, such as stearyl alcohols, in formulations of hair conditioners and shampoos.
The cationic surfactant concentration in conditioners is generally of the order of 1–2% and the alcohol concentrations are usually equal to or greater than those of the cationic surfactants.
The ternary system, surfactant/fatty alcohol/water, leads to a lamellar structure forming a percolated network giving rise to a gel.

Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell wall components.
Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride has been shown to be effective against Gram-positive bacteria, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE).
Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride disrupts the membrane potential of mitochondria in bacteria, leading to cell lysis.
The effectiveness of Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride has been tested by surface methodology and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on human serum samples.
This study found that Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride was more effective than benzalkonium chloride, a chemical commonly used as a preservative in cosmetics.
As a cationic surfactant, Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride is absorbed onto negatively charged surfaces without leaving a visible film.
Cetyltrimethylammonium chloride forms micelles in water that clean the surfaces completely.
