Use Areas
Iodination and radioiodination
Hypochlorite released from chloramine-T acts as an effective oxidizing agent for iodide to form iodine monochloride (ICl). ICl rapidly undergoes electrophilic substitution predominantly with activated aromatic rings, such as those of the amino acid tyrosine. Thus, chloramine-T is widely used for the incorporation of iodine to peptides and proteins. Chloramine-T together with iodogen or lactoperoxidase is commonly used for labeling peptides and proteins with radioiodine isotopes (123I, 125I or 131I).

Biocide
Chloramine-T is available in tablet or powder form and has to be dissolved before use. It is sprayed on a surface and allowed to stand for at least 15 minutes before being wiped off or allowed to dry. It is used in areas such as hospitals, laboratories, nursing homes, funeral homes, medical, dental and veterinary facilities, where control of pathogens is required, for disinfecting surfaces and soaking medical and dental equipment. The substance is also used for parasite control and for drinking water disinfection.

Chloramine-T is an algicide, bactericide, virucide, fungicide (including spores), germicide. It is also effective against mycobacteria such as tuberculosis, foot-and-mouth disease and avian influenza. The molecular structure of toluene sulfonyl amide is similar to para-aminobenzoic acid, an intermediate in bacterial metabolism, which is disrupted by this sulfonamide (in the same way as by a sulfa drug). Therefore, chloramine-T is capable of inhibiting bacterial growth with two mechanisms, with the phenyl sulfonamide moiety and the hypochlorite, which destroys the DNA structure via oxidation and thereby prevents microbes from reproducing and reforming.

Protective agent
Chloramine-T reacts readily with mustard gas to yield a harmless crystalline sulfimide; chloramine-T derivatives are being studied as protective agents against poison gas.

Applications
Chloramine T trihydrate may be used as an oxidizing agent in the synthesis of 8-chloro-[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a]pyrazine derivatives and novel isoxazolines.
It may also be used in the synthesis of the following compounds:

- Fused 3,6-disubstituted triazolothiadiazoles by the oxidative cyclization of N-heteroaryl-substituted hydrazones.
Nitrene source for aziridinations and aminohydroxylations.
General description
Chloramine T (CAT) trihydrate is a commonly used reagent for organic synthesis especially in heterocyclic chemistry. CAT is an active chlorine compound that shows antimicrobial activity

Chloramine-B and Chloramine-T are antiseptic agents derived from combining chloramine and benzenesulfonamide or p-toluenesulfonamide respectively. Chloramine  is one of the most widely used chemical disinfectants in drinking water systems. Sulfonamide molecular structure is similar to p-Aminobenzoic acid (PABA) which is needed in bacteria organisms as a substrate of the enzyme dihydropteroate synthetase for the synthesis of tetrahydrofolic acid (THF). Sulfonamides are capable of interfering with the metabolic processes in bacteria that require PABA. They act as antimicrobial agents by inhibiting bacterial growth and activity. Chloramine B and Chloramine B are used as an oxidizing agent, an antiseptic, a germicide as well as a chlorinating agent in organic synthesis. Its ions resulting from dissolving in water involve interfering with micro-organisms' cell process by oxidations of proteins or enzymes.

Chloramine-T, the sodium salt of N-chloro-p-toluenesulfonamide, is an antibacterial agent and disinfectant that has been in use for more than a century. Its synthesis was first reported by F. D. Chattaway in 1905. In water, chloramine-T decomposes to release active chlorine, which acts as a biocide. The sulfonamide moiety’s action is similar to that of sulfa drugs.

Chloramine-T is a broad-spectrum disinfectant for external use. It contains 24-25% available chlorine and has stable performance. It has a bactericidal effect on bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores. It is often used to wash and disinfect wounds and ulcers. It is suitable for disinfection of drinking water and tableware, food, various utensils, fruits and vegetables, aquaculture, wound and mucosa washing.

Chloramine-T is used for disinfection and as an algicide, bactericide, germicide, for parasite control, and for drinking water disinfection. The molecular structure of toluene sulfonyl amide is similar to para-aminobenzoic acid, an intermediate in bacterial metabolism, which is disrupted by this sulfonamide (in the same way as by a sulfa drug). Therefore, chloramine-T is capable of inhibiting bacterial growth with two mechanisms, with the phenyl sulfonamide moiety and the electrophilic chlorine.

It is a disinfectant with broad spectrum and stable properties. It can kill bacteria, viruses, fungi etc.: non-irritant to mucous membrane and usually used in the washing and disinfection of wound and ulcer surface. It is also suitable for the disinfection of tableware, food, fruits and vegetables and fish breeding and poultry raising.

Chloramine-T, has a moderate and long-term effect, posing no stimulation to mucosa and side effects. It is normally applied in cleaning the wound and widely used in the sterilization for medical equipment in sterile labs. Beside, Chloramine-T, CAS 127-65-1, plays a role as disinfectant in other areas, such as in food and aquaculture industry. In addition, Chloramine-T, CAS 127-65-1, enjoys application in dyeing industry as well. It can be used as bleach for plant fiber and fabrics. The bleach is made by first dissolving the white powder and diluting the Chloramine-T solution with water into 0.1%-0.3%. Then heat the solution to 70-80°C. Thus, fabrics can be put into the solution to be bleached. Chloramine-T, CAS 127-65-1, also functions as oxidation desizing agent. It should be noted that Chloramine-T, CAS 127-65-1, would gradually resolve and lose available chlorine when exposed to open air, so it should be kept in sealed containers and put in a cool, dry place.

White to yellow crystals with a slight odor of Chlorine. Chloramine T was originally used as a bleach in a manner similar to Chloramine B. It is now primarily used as an Disinfectant and Fungicide.

Chloramine T decomposes slowly in the dew air. The effective chlorine in one year is only reduced by 0.1%. It gradually loses chlorine and turns yellow. It is easy to dissolve in water, ethanol, chloroform, ether or benzene. Its aqueous solution reacts slightly with phenolphthalein and litmus reagent at pH 8-10.

1. The effective chlorine content of chloramine T is about 23-26%, which is equivalent to the content of the substance in chloramine T of 91.5-100%. Exposed in the air, Chloramine T will gradually decompose and lose effective chlorine, so it must be stored in a sealed container and kept in a dry and cool place.

2. One part of chloramine-T can be dissolved in 7 parts of cold water (15.5 degrees) or 2 parts of boiling hot water. Chloramine T is a mild oxidant in neutral or alkaline medium. When heated, a large amount of oxygen will be released. This kind of primary oxygen can oxidize the natural pigment and fade it, thus achieving the bleaching effect.

3. It is difficult to control the decomposition and oxygen release of chloramine-T in acid medium. Therefore, when bleaching with chloramine T, it is most suitable to be carried out in neutral solution. That is to say, it can be bleached directly by dissolving chloramine T in water, heating or directly dissolving in hot water.

Chloramine T is a by-product in the production of saccharin. It is obtained by amination of p-toluenesulfonyl chloride with ammonia, salt formation with liquid alkali and chlorination with chlorine.

As a disinfectant, Chloramine-T is a disinfectant with broad-spectrum bactericidal ability for external use. It contains 24-25% effective chlorine and is stable. It can kill bacteria, viruses, fungi and spores. Its action principle is that the solution produces hypochlorite to release chlorine, which has a slow and lasting bactericidal effect and can dissolve necrotic tissue.

Chloramine T has a mild and lasting effect, no irritation to mucous membrane, no side effects, and excellent effect. It is often used for washing and disinfecting wounds and ulcer surfaces

At the same time, Chloramine T is widely used in the sterilization of sterile rooms and medical devices of pharmaceutical enterprises; This product is also suitable for disinfection of drinking water utensils, food, various utensils, fruits and vegetables, wound and mucous membrane washing
