Citrus red 2 is not soluble in water, but is readily soluble in many organic solvents.

Citrus red 2 is sometimes used to color oranges.
Citrus red 2 is only permitted to be used on the peel.

Citrus red 2 is permitted when the fruit is intended to be eaten, but is not permitted when the fruit is intended or used for processing, for example to manufacture orange juice.
Citrus red 2 is used on some oranges from the US state of Florida but is banned in the US states of California and Arizona.

Citrus red 2 appears as orange to yellow solid or dark red powder.
Citrus red 2 is a member of azobenzenes.

Citrus red 2 is an azo compound.
Flammable gases are formed by mixing materials in this group with alkali metals.

Explosive combination can occur with strong oxidizing agents, metal salts, peroxides, and sulfides.
The Citrus red 2 feeds on citrus leaves, stems, and fruit as well as Skimmia japonica, rose, and pear.

Citrus red 2 can invade homes in the fall and spring to infest Citrus red 2s on porches and sunrooms.
At first the mites cause a silvery stippling of the leaves as they suck out the contents of the plant cells in the epidermis and mesophyll.

Scratch-like feeding marks turn leaves and green immature fruit noticeably pale.
Injured mature oranges and lemons turn a pale straw yellow.

If uncontrolled, Citrus red 2s may cause complete leaf drop.
Citrus red 2 is one of the most important pests of citrus in tropical areas.

Citrus red 2 reproduces very quickly and under dry conditions can go from egg to adult in only about 12 days.
Citrus red 2s can increase when broad-spectrum pesticides are applied too often for the control of citrus leafminer, and other pests.

This is because the natural enemies of red mite, including predatory mites and ladybird beetles, are also killed by pesticides.
Citrus red 2 shall be used only for coloring the skins of oranges that are not intended or used for processing (or if so used are designated in the trade as Packinghouse elimination) and that meet minimum maturity standards established by or under the laws of the States in which the oranges are grown.

Oranges colored with Citrus Red No. 2 shall bear not more than 2.0 parts per million of such color additive, calculated on the basis of the weight of the whole fruit.
The label of the color additive and any mixtures prepared therefrom and intended solely or in part for coloring purposes shall conform to the requirements of § 70.25 of this chapter.

To meet the requirements of § 70.25 (b) and (c) of this chapter the label shall bear:
The statement (or its equivalent) “To be used only for coloring skins of oranges.”

Directions for use to limit the amount of the color additive to not more than 2.0 parts per million, calculated on the basis of the weight of the whole fruit.
All batches of Citrus red 2 shall be certified in accordance with regulations in part 80 of this chapter.

Citrus red 2 was first recorded in Sydney in 1966 and is established across the Central Coast region of New South Wales.
Citrus red 2 is not a serious pest on the Central Coast where high humidity and natural enemies keep population levels low.

However, Citrus red 2 could be very damaging if Citrus red mite were to spread to inland areas where dry conditions would be more favourable for mite development.
Citrus red mite is an azo compound.

Flammable gases are formed by mixing materials in this group with alkali metals.
Explosive combination can occur with strong oxidizing agents, metal salts, peroxides, and sulfides.

Slightly soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol and rape oil.
