WHAT DOES COCOBETAINE DO?
Cocobetaine has been in commercial use since the 1950s.
Cocobetaine was initially used during World War II as a cleanser that could lather up in cold water.
Later, the first Cocobetaine shampoo was developed using coconut oil as a base.
The mild formula lathered well but wasn't as astringent as typical detergents.
Cocobetaine became the famous "no more tears" baby shampoo.

EXTRACTION AND PRESENTATION of COCOBETAINE:
To produce Cocobetaine, coconut fatty acids (i.e., particularly fatty acids with eight to eighteen carbon atoms in the compound) or their triacylglycerols are first amidated using 3-aminopropyldimethylamine.
This is followed by carboxymethylation with chloroacetic acid under basic conditions.
In 2003, approximately 100 kilotons of 30% product were produced worldwide.
