Copper(II) nitrate trihydrate describes any member of the family of inorganic compounds with the formula Cu(NO3)2(H2O)x. The hydrates are blue solids. Anhydrous copper nitrate forms blue-green crystals and sublimes in a vacuum at 150-200 °C.Common hydrates are the hemipentahydrate and trihydrate.

Applications
Copper(II) nitrate trihydrate finds a variety of applications, the main one being its conversion to copper(II) oxide, which is used as catalyst for a variety of processes in organic chemistry.

Chemical Properties
Copper(II) nitrate trihydrate, Cu(NO3)2·3H2O, [10031-43-3], MW 241.59, MP 114.5°C, d 2.32, is a deep blue deliquescent material that crystallizes as rhombic platelets.
Copper(II) nitrate trihydrate is very soluble in water, 77.4 g/100 g solution, and in methanol and ethanol. The anhydrous salt has been prepared by reaction of copper metal with N2O4 in ethylacetate, but it is not available commercially.

Chemical Properties
Dark blue columnar crystals. Easily soluble in water and ethanol, its solution is acidic. Dissolved in concentrated ammonia water to form the complex salt of copper tetrammine dinitrate.

Use
1. Copper(II) nitrate trihydrate is used as enamel colorant, also used for copper plating, copper oxide and pesticides, etc.

2. Copper(II) nitrate trihydrate is used to make purer copper oxide and is also a raw material for making other copper salts and copper plating. 
Copper(II) nitrate trihydrate is also used to make pesticides. Used as mordant, copper catalyst, combustion aid. The enamel industry is used as a colorant. 
Copper(II) nitrate trihydrate is also used in the paint industry to make inorganic pigments.
