COSMETIC FLUID 1406-OH

CAS Number: 63148-62-9, 31692-79-2
 Synonyms: Dimethicone (and) Dimethiconol
Cosmetic Fluid 1406-OH is a specialized ingredient used in the formulation of personal care and cosmetic products.
It is supplied by Innospec Performance Chemicals and is characterized as a blend of two silicone-based materials. Its INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) name is Dimethicone (and) Dimethiconol, indicating it is a mixture of a silicone oil (dimethicone) and a silicone polymer with hydroxyl groups (dimethiconol) .
The primary function of Cosmetic Fluid 1406-OH in cosmetic formulations is that of an emollient. Emollients are ingredients that help to soften and smooth the skin by forming a barrier on its surface, which helps to prevent water loss and keep the skin feeling supple. This particular fluid is noted for providing a smooth and lubricious feel upon application, enhancing the sensory experience of the product . A key feature of this ingredient is its ability to impart water resistance to products. This makes it especially valuable in formulations where durability upon exposure to water is desired, such as in sunscreens and water-resistant makeup .
Specific Applications and Benefits:
Sun Care (SPF Products): This is a flagship application. Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide (mineral sunscreens) and organic UV filters can often leave a chalky residue or feel drying. Cosmetic Fluid 1406-OH helps to disperse these pigments evenly, improving their efficiency (SPF boost). More importantly, its water-resistant film helps the sunscreen remain on the skin during swimming or sweating, ensuring continued protection. It also mitigates the "dry-down" effect, leaving the skin feeling soft rather than tight and parched.
Color Cosmetics: In foundations, concealers, and tinted moisturizers, it acts as a binder and emollient. It helps create a smooth, even application that glides over the skin, minimizing the appearance of fine lines and pores. The water-resistant nature helps the makeup last longer and resist transfer.
Skin and Body Care: In general moisturizers, body butters, and lotions, it imparts a luxurious, silky after-feel. It is non-comedogenic (does not clog pores), making it suitable for a wide range of skin types, including oily and acne-prone skin, as it provides moisture without oiliness.
Intimate Care: Its gentle, non-irritating nature and ability to form a protective barrier make it suitable for intimate care formulations, providing comfort and protection without disrupting the natural pH balance.

Functional Benefits
The ingredient serves multiple functions in cosmetic formulations:
Emollient Properties: It acts as a silicone-based emollient that provides a lubricious skin feel upon application
Water Resistance: Offers water-resistant properties, making it particularly valuable for products designed to withstand exposure to water
Smooth Application: Delivers smooth application characteristics that enhance the sensory experience of finished products
Moisturizing: Contributes to the moisturizing effect of formulations

Formulation Compatibility
The product can be effectively combined with commonly used esters, natural oils, hydrocarbons, or other silicones, offering formulators flexibility in creating a variety of personal care applications with different textures and performance characteristics
