Applications of CYMEL 327:
CYMEL 327 is used as a highly reactive melamine crosslinker in high-solids, waterborne, coil coating, metal decorating, automotive, automotive OEM, industrial metal, and pre-coated metal coating systems.
CYMEL 327 is effective with backbone polymers containing hydroxyl, carboxyl, or amide functional groups, especially acrylic, alkyd, polyester, and epoxy resins.
CYMEL 327 helps produce baked coating films with fast cure response, high hardness, good gloss, chemical resistance, outdoor durability, low formaldehyde release, and lower VOC potential in high-solids formulations.
Application Areas:
High solids coatings
Waterborne coatings
Coil coatings and metal decorating
Automotive coatings
Benefits of CYMEL 327:
High solids
Fast cure response
Low formaldehyde release
Backbone Polymer Selection:
CYMEL 327 is an effective crosslinker for backbone polymer resins containing hydroxyl, carboxyl, and amide functional groups, such as those found on alkyd, polyester or acrylic resins.
Although the optimum level of CYMEL 327 should be determined experimentally, ratios of 25 to 35% based on resin solids are typically most effective.
Catalysis:
CYMEL 327 resin may not require the addition of an acid catalyst to the formulation to obtain effective cure.
In many instances, the acidity of the backbone polymer in the formulation is sufficient to catalyze the reaction under normal baking conditions (15-20 minutes at 120-150°C).
If catalyst addition is required, then 0.5-1.0% of CYCAT® 296-9 catalyst based on total resin solids is recommended.
Formulation Stability:
The stability of solvent-borne systems containing CYMEL 327 can be enhanced by the addition of primary alcohols, amines, or a combination of these.
Low molecular weight primary alcohols such as ethanol and n-butanol aremost effective.
Recommended amines are TEA, DMEA or 2-AMP at a concentration of 0.5-1.0% on total binder solids.
For best stability in waterborne systems, a pH between 7.5-8.5 should be maintained using tertiary amines only.
Stability and Reactivity of CYMEL 327:
Chemical stability:
CYMEL 327 is stable under normal recommended handling and storage conditions.
Reactivity:
No specific hazardous reactivity is reported under normal use conditions.
Possibility of hazardous reactions:
Hazardous polymerization is not expected to occur.
Conditions to avoid:
Heat, sparks, open flames, hot surfaces, static discharge, and ignition sources should be avoided.
Incompatible materials:
Strong oxidizing agents and strong nitrating agents should be avoided.
Hazardous decomposition products:
Thermal decomposition or fire may produce ammonia, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, formaldehyde, methanol, nitrogen oxides, and isobutanol vapors.
Handling and Storage of CYMEL 327:
Handling:
CYMEL 327 should be handled using good industrial hygiene and safety practices.
