Citrus Terpenes is a mixture of unsaturated optically-active cyclic aliphatic hydrocarbons, with about 95% d-limonene and 5% the essence of citrus.

-Because of its sweet citrus taste and odor, Citrus Terpenes is used as a flavor and fragrance additive in perfumes, soap and detergent, creams and lotions, and in a variety of foodstuffs at levels regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. 
-Citrus Terpeness use in consumer and household cleaning products (ie. Citra~olve, PineSol, Orange Mexo, etc.) led to the development of industrial cleaning products and an electronics defluxer, thereby becoming an alternative to chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent.
-The identification of terpene compounds and its use in household cleaners provided the impetus for electronics industry involvement in the development of an alternative terpene-based electronics defluxer. A U.S. patent issued to Hayes et all1 in 1987, describes a rosin flux cleaner consisting of a terpene material and emulsifying surfactants. 
-In 1988, ATtT and Petroferm Inc., determined d-Limonene as having the most commercial potential as an electronics defluxer. Petroferm then announced the formulation of the semi-aqueous terpene-based cleaner BIOACT EC-~(~~), consisting of d-Limonene and a surfactant material, that could serve as an alternative electronics def luxer.  
-Citrus Terpenes was reformulated into BIOACT EC-~R(~~) which has the advantage of being recyclable. 
-Citrus Terpenes may be used at full strength, that is without dilution, as an eco-friendly detergent; however, direct application to painted surfaces, plexiglass, plastics, or fiberglass is not recommended. 
-Conversely, it may be added to wetting agents, such as water or vinegar bases, to achieve better solubilization. Either method will make for a natural yet equally effective industrial-strength “green” surface disinfectant that is ideal for household cleaning.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES:

Citrus Terpenes (4R)-(+)-Citrus Terpenes and (4S)-(?)-limonene as well as the racemate (dipentene) occur abundantly in many essential oils.
The(+) isomer is present in citrus peel oils at a concentration of over 90%; a low concentration of the (?) isomer is found in oils from the Mentha species and conifers.
Citrus Terpenes is a liquid with lemon-like odor. 
Citrus Terpenes is a reactive compound; oxidation often yields more than one product. Dehydrogenation leads to p-cymene. 
Citrus Terpenes can be converted into cyclic terpene alcohols by hydrohalogenation, followed by hydrolysis. 
Nitrosyl chloride adds selectively to the endocyclic double bond; this reaction is utilized in the manufacture of (?)-carvone from (+)- limonene.
(+)-Citrus Terpenes is obtained in large amounts as a by-product in the production of orange juice; (?)-limonene is isolated in relatively small quantities from essential oils. 
Racemic limonenes, which are commercially available under the name dipentene, are formed as by-products in many acid-catalyzed isomerizations of α- and β-pinene. 
Distillation of the so-called dipentene fraction yields limonenes in varying degrees of purity.
The Citrus Terpenes are used as fragrance materials for perfuming household products and as components of artificial essential oils.
d-, l- or dl-Citrus Terpenes has a pleasant, lemon-like odor free from camphoraceous and turpentine-like notes.

OCCURENCE:

Citrus Terpenes has been reported found in more than 300 essential oils in amounts ranging from 90 to 95% (lemon, orange, mandarin) to as low as 1% (palmarosa); the most widespread form is the d-limonene, followed by the racemic form and then l-limo nene. 
Also reported found in ginger, nutmeg, pepper, mace, hop oil, coriander seed, calamus, dill herb, caraway seed and rosemary.

PRODUCTION METHOD:

Citrus Terpenes occurs as a by-product in the manufacture of terpineol and in various synthetic products made from α-pinene or turpentine oil. 
Citrus Terpenes is found in the gas phase of tobacco smoke and has been detected in urban atmospheres.


INHALATION:

Short term exposure: Available data indicates that this product is not harmful. 
In addition product is unlikely to cause any discomfort or irritation.
Long Term exposure: No data for health effects associated with long term inhalation.

SKIN CONTACT:

Short term exposure: Classified as a potential sensitiser by skin contact. 
Exposure to a skin sensitiser, once sensitisation has occurred, may manifest itself as skin rash or inflammation, and in some individuals this reaction can be severe.
In addition product may be irritating, but is unlikely to cause anything more than mild transient discomfort.
Long Term exposure: No data for health effects associated with long term skin exposure.

However, this product is an oral irritant. 
Symptoms may include burning sensation and reddening of skin in mouth and throat. Other symptoms may also become evident, but all should disappear once exposure has ceased. 

HANDLİNG: 

Keep exposure to this product to a minimum, and minimise the quantities kept in work areas. 
The measures detailed below under "Storage" should be followed during handling in order to minimise risks to persons using the product in the workplace. 
Also, avoid contact or contamination of product with incompatible materials listed in Section 10.

STORAGE: 

Store in a cool, well ventilated area, and make sure that surrounding electrical devices and switches are suitable.
Check containers periodically for leaks. Containers should be kept closed in order to minimise contamination and possible evaporation. 
Make sure that the product does not come into contact with substances listed under "Incompatibilities" in Section 10. 
If you keep more than 10000kg or L of Dangerous Goods of Packaging Group III, you may be required to license the premises or notify your Dangerous Goods authority. 
If you have any doubts, we suggest you contact your Dangerous Goods authority in order to clarify your obligations. 
Check packaging - there may be further storage instructions on the label.
