CI 12085. D not-recommended for nail lacquer and prohibited for use in eye make-up. In Japan, it is used in cleansing preparations, hair preparations, treatment preparations, make-up preparations, fragrant preparations, suntan / sunscreen preparations, nail make-up preparations, eyeliner preparations, lip preparations, oral preparations and bath preparations. Recommended usage level in lipstick is 3% maximum. Complies with U.S Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) title 21, parts 70-82, Japan (CSL & JSCI) and European Union Cosmetics Directive 76/768/EEC.CI 12085. D & C Red 36 as an organic coloring pigment. It is an aluminium lake, produced by the adsorption of water soluble dye onto a substrate, rendering the color insoluble in water. It contains soft and fine particles to achieve consistency in shades. Moreover, it is non-GMO derived. D & C Red 36 finds application in formulating compact powders, blushes, mascaras, face & eye make-up, eye shadows, nail lacquers, nail paints, lip gloss, lipsticks and liquid make-up products. Complies with US FDA, Halal, Kosher, ISI and REACH.In cosmetics and personal care products, Red 36 (D&C Red No. 36) and Red 36 Lake are colorants used in the formulation of blushers, lipsticks, face powders and other makeup products, as well as nail polish and enamels.Red 36 and Red 36 Lake impart color to cosmetics and personal care products.Pigment in cosmetic lip products only 3% w/w max ; externally applied cosmetics only.Used in some inks and in low cost articles such as detergents, floor polishes, colored pencils.Pigment (printing inks, resins, paper, cosmetics).Manufactured by diazotization of 2-chloro-4-nitrobenzenamine in acid medium and coupling with 2-naphthalenol in acid medium. The color additive D&C Red No. 36 /Pigment Red 4/ may be safely used for coloring ingested drugs, other than mouthwashes and dentifrices, in amounts not to exceed 1.7 mg/daily dose of the drug for drugs that are taken continuously only less than 1 year. For drugs taken continuously for longer than 1 year, the color additive shall not be used for amounts to exceed 1.0 mg/daily dose of the drug. /Pigment Red 4/ may be safely used for coloring externally applied drugs in amounts consistent with current good manufacturing practice.Pigment is not used in foods as it is prohibited by the FDA.The most favorable course of action is to use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational exposure or environmental contamination. Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air quality; potential migration in soil or water; effects on animal, aquatic, and plant life; and conformance with environmental and public health regulations. All batches of this color additive when used for drugs shall meet the specifications, uses and restrictions, and labeling regulations contained in 21 CFR Part 74 and be certified in accordance with regulations in 21 CFR Part 80.C.I. Pigment Red 4's production and use in printing inks, resins, paper, cosmetic lip products, and limited use as a drug colorant may result in its release to the environment through various waste streams. If released to air, an estimated vapor pressure of 1.6X10-10 mm Hg at 25 °C indicates C.I. Pigment Red 4 will exist solely in the particulate phase in the atmosphere. Particulate-phase C.I. Pigment Red 4 will be removed from the atmosphere by wet or dry deposition C.I. Pigment Red 4 contains functional groups that are typically chromophores which absorb at wavelengths >290 nm; therefore C.I. Pigment Red 4 may be susceptible to direct photolysis by sunlight. If released to soil, C.I. Pigment Red 4 is expected to be immbobile based upon an estimated Koc of 2.3X10+5. Volatilization from moist soil surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process based upon an estimated Henry's Law constant of 9.3X10-13 atm-cu m/mole. C.I. Pigment Red 4 is not expected to volatilize from dry soil surfaces based upon its vapor pressure. Biodegradation data were not available. If released into water, C.I. Pigment Red 4 is expected to adsorb to suspended solids and sediment based upon the estimated Koc. Volatilization from water surfaces is not expected to be an important fate process based upon this compound's estimated Henry's Law constant. An estimated BCF of 10 suggests bioconcentration in aquatic organisms is low. Hydrolysis is not expected to be an important environmental fate process since this compound lacks functional groups that hydrolyze under environmental conditions. Occupational exposure to C.I. Pigment Red 4 may occur through inhalation of dust and dermal contact with this compound at workplaces where C.I. Pigment Red 4 is produced or used. Use data indicate that the general population may be exposed to C.I. Pigment Red 4 via dermal contact with consumer products and ingestion of limited drugs containing this compound.D&C Red No. 36 can be analyzed by this reverse phase (RP) HPLC method with simple conditions. The mobile phase contains an acetonitrile (MeCN), water, and phosphoric acid. For Mass-Spec (MS) compatible applications the phosphoric acid needs to be replaced with formic acid. Smaller 3 µm particles columns available for fast UPLC applications. This liquid chromatography method is scalable and can be used for isolation impurities in preparative separation. It also suitable for pharmacokinetics.

D&C Red 36 is an orange red pigment.

Property
D&C Red 36 is an insoluble pigment in water and oil, easily dispersible. It gives a vivid and saturated color.
Mixed with titanium dioxide it gives rise to various shades of light red / pink, for better use it is advisable to pre-disperse it in a little oil.
