The environmental impacts of Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) and D4 have attracted attention because these compounds are pervasive. 
Cyclic siloxanes have been detected in some species of aquatic life.
A scientific review in Canada has determined that “Siloxane Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) does not pose a danger to the environment” and a scientific assessment of Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) by the Australian government stated, "the direct risks to aquatic life from exposure to these chemicals at expected surface water concentrations are not likely to be significant."

However, in the European Union, Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) was characterized as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) due to its PBT and vPvB properties and was thus included in the candidate list for authorisation.
Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) cannot be placed on the market in the European Union in wash-off cosmetic products in a concentration equal to or greater than 0.1 % by weight.

There have been concerns regarding the persistence and bioaccumulation of Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) in the environment, particularly in aquatic systems. 
It is classified as a persistent organic pollutant (POP), and there is ongoing research into its environmental effects.
While Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) is generally considered safe in low concentrations, prolonged exposure to high levels of the compound, particularly through inhalation or skin contact, may cause irritation to the respiratory system or skin. 

There are also concerns about its potential to affect wildlife, particularly aquatic organisms.
Due to environmental concerns, regulatory agencies in some regions have imposed limits on the use of Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) in certain products. 
For example, the European Union has classified Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) as a substance of very high concern (SVHC) under REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals).
