Chlorine is a common oxidizer and biocide widely used in bleaches, cleaning compounds, cooling towers and swimming pools.
Amino Phosphonates quickly decompose in the presence of chlorine and are not suited for such applications.
NonAmino phosphonates (DEQUEST 2010 and 7000) are stable at typical chlorine levels used in cooling water treatment.
Phosphonates’ reactions with chlorine are greatly reduced in the presence of scalant ions and in the presence of easily oxidized microorganisms, which chlorine may attack preferentially.
Formulation with zinc is one of the ways to enhance the stability of the phosphonates.
DEQUEST 6004 is the only phosphonate suitable for the stabilization of alkaline hypochlorite solutions.
