Dicyandiamde is a strongly alkaline and water-soluble white crystalline compound with the scientific name of cyanoguanidine. 
Dicyandiamde is cyanamide or cyanoguanidine dimer, which is mainly used in the production of melamine.

Dicyandiamde, the amide of normal cyanic acid, is a white crystal that melts at 45 °C. 
Dicyandiamde is easily soluble in water, alcohol and diethyl ether. 

Dicyandiamde is commercially prepared from limestone-derived carbonate by the carbide process or by desulfurization of thiourea in the presence of a catalyst (mercuric oxide).
Dicyandiamde is prepared with ammonia and cyanogen halides. 

Dicyandiamde is heated at 150°C, it polymerizes to dicyandiamide and tricyantriamide to melamine.

USES:

Dicyandiamde is the raw material of melamine and the intermediate for the synthesis of medicines, pesticides and dyes. Used in organic synthesis and resin synthesis, also used as a vulcanization accelerator and hardener.
Dycyandiamide is used as an element of synthesis for production of plastics, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals and technical chemicals.
Dicyandiamide has been widely used in the production of melamine as an intermediate. 

Dicyandiamde is also the basic ingredient to produce resins and plastics which has a wide range of industrial uses.
Dicyandiamide is often used to reduce the negative effects of leaching of nitrate to waters and greenhouse gas emission on farm land. 

Dicyandiamide has been used to improve the growth of pastures for cows grazing. 
Dicyandiamde is also used in the formulation of fertilizer in order to slow down the release of nitrogen source. 

The dicyandiamide residue can remain in milk products when they are on pastures when dicyandiamide has been applied. 
The trace dicyandiamide detected in milk products were found to be associated with the grass that contaminated by dicyandiamide from fertilizers.
