(DIETHYLAMINO)ETHANOL

CAS:    100-37-8
MF:    C6H15NO
MW:    117.19
EINECS:    202-845-2

(Diethylamino)ethanol is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C6H15NO.
(Diethylamino)ethanol is used as a precursor in the production of a variety of chemical commodities such as the local anesthetic procaine.
(Diethylamino)ethanol can be reacted with 4-aminobenzoic acid to make procaine.
(Diethylamino)ethanol can be used as a precursor for DEAE-cellulose resin, which is commonly used in ion exchange chromatography.
(Diethylamino)ethanol can also be conveniently obtained from renewable sources.
(Diethylamino)ethanol is chemically stable and able to absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) from its surroundings.
In solution, (Diethylamino)ethanol can decrease the surface tension of water when the temperature is increased.

(Diethylamino)ethanol is an irritant to the eyes, skin, and respiratory system.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health have set occupational exposure limits for workers handling the chemical at 10 ppm (50 mg/m3) over an eight-hour workday.
(Diethylamino)ethanol is a member of the class of ethanolamines that is aminoethanol in which the hydrogens of the amino group are replaced by ethyl groups.
(Diethylamino)ethanol is a member of ethanolamines, a tertiary amino compound and a primary alcohol.
(Diethylamino)ethanol derives from an ethanolamine.
(Diethylamino)ethanol derives from a hydride of a triethylamine.
Flammable.
Soluble in water.
(Diethylamino)ethanol is sensitive to moisture.
Slowly hydrolyzes.

(Diethylamino)ethanol is a clear liquid.
(Diethylamino)ethanol is used as a neutralizing amine for boiler water, coatings, etc.
The ideal vapor pressure and vapor-liquid distribution properties of (Diethylamino)ethanol make it the best choice for pH adjustment of process water.

Beyond its application in the water treatment segment, (Diethylamino)ethanol is also used as a neutralizing amine for indrustrial coatings and an intermediate for various surfactants.

Colorless, hygroscopic liquid base that is used as a vapor phase corrosion inhibitor.
(Diethylamino)ethanol is added to the water in boilers in steam humidification systems to minimize pipe corrosion.
(Diethylamino)ethanol is also used as an alkalizing agent in HVAC systems to neutralize carbonic acids.
When (Diethylamino)ethanol is used in an open ventilation system, it can deposit on all available surfaces including works of art.
(Diethylamino)ethanol produces an oily residue that can soften varnishes.

(Diethylamino)ethanol is corrosive to eyes, skin and respiratory mucosa.
(Diethylamino)ethanol can be absorbed by the respiratory tract and digestive tract as well as the skin, affecting the nervous system.
The skin and eyes were washed with a large amount of running water immediately after contact.
Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse, should be away from the fire, heat sources, to prevent direct sunlight.
(Diethylamino)ethanol cannot be stored and transported together with oxidant and acid substances.

Production Methods
(Diethylamino)ethanol is a tertiary amine produced by reaction of ethylene oxide or ethylene chlorhydrin and diethylamine (RTECS 1988).
Itokazu (1987) has modified this process for manufacture of (Diethylamino)ethanol without eventual discoloration.
Production in this country exceeds 2866 pounds per year (HSDB 1988).
