DIMETHICONE 5

CAS NO:9016-00-6
EC NO:203-497-4

Dimethicone 5 is a silicone-based ingredient used in many personal care products.
Dimethicone 5 keeps all of the ingredients in a product from separating.
Dimethicone 5 also gives these products a smooth, silky texture.

When applied to the skin or hair, Dimethicone 5 creates a physical barrier to seal in hydration, keeping skin moisturized and hair frizz-free.

In cosmetics, Dimethicone 5 “helps to fill in fine lines and wrinkles,” says Jessie Cheung, MD, a board certified dermatologist.

Dimethicone 5 helps your makeup look even rather than cakey, and gives it a matte finish.
Dimethicone 5 is also noncomedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores.

What Dimethicone 5 used in?
You can find Dimethicone 5 in many products for many different reasons.
The main places it shows up are:

Cosmetics.

This is because of Dimethicone 5’s ability to smooth the appearance of fine lines and form a protective barrier, Cheung explains.
Moisturizers and creams.
Dimethicone 5 forms a layer on the skin, thereby locking in hydration and decreasing water loss.
Shampoo, conditioner, and hairstyling products.
“Dimethicone 5 coats the strands and smooths the cuticles, giving a sleek and shiny look while protecting from heat,” Cheung says.
Anti-itch products.
Since Dimethicone 5 helps moisturize skin and retain water, it can help soothe dry, itchy skin.

Is Dimethicone 5 safe for your skin or hair?
Some people believe that Dimethicone 5 is harmful because it’s not natural.
Others say that since it forms a barrier, Dimethicone 5 seals in oil, sweat, dirt, and other things that can clog pores and lead to acne.

However, the amount of Dimethicone 5 in face and hair products is generally considered safe.

In a 2019 review, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel found that most over-the-counter products contain less than 15 percent Dimethicone 5.

Based on previous research, the review concluded that Dimethicone 5 in cosmetic products is safe.

“Though there is public concern about Dimethicone 5, there is no data to substantiate it.
It’s a safe product to use, and it’s very unlikely that it can be absorbed in the skin due to its large molecular weight,” says Peterson Pierre, MD, dermatologist and founder of the Pierre Skin Care Institute.

That said, anyone may have a reaction to any product.
If you notice any of the following, you may be having an allergic reaction:

redness
itching
swelling
burning
hives
irritation
If this happens, wash the product off with gentle soap and water, and stop using the product immediately.

If things don’t improve within a few days, see a healthcare provider, like your primary care doctor or dermatologist.
If the reaction is severe, see them immediately.

Also know that if you use hair care products with Dimethicone 5, it can build up on hair and prevent the penetration of moisturizing ingredients.

“Swap in a clarifying shampoo every so often,” Cheung recommends.

The bottom line
Dimethicone 5 is a silicone-based ingredient used in primers, foundations, moisturizers, shampoos, conditioners, and other skin and hair care products.

Dimethicone 5 gives a silky-smooth texture, helps retain moisture, and fills in lines and wrinkles so makeup looks even.

Research shows that the level of Dimethicone 5 found in personal care products is safe.
It’s also noncomedogenic and won’t clog pores.

“From a health perspective, there is no reason to avoid products with Dimethicone 5.
They have a nice cosmetic feel and do a good job moisturizing the skin and hair,” Pierre says.

However, some people may have a reaction to it.
If you notice any irritation, stop using the product and see a healthcare provider.

Dimethicone 5 is a silicone-based polymer that is frequently used as a skin protectant in skincare products.
The second most common moisturizing ingredient found in moisturizers after petrolatum, Dimethicone 5 helps condition the skin—improving its softness and flexibility.

WHAT IS DIMETHICONE 5 USED FOR?

Dimethicone 5 contributes to the "slip" or "glide" felt upon the application of skincare products, making them spread easily onto the skin.
In addition, Dimethicone 5 coats the skin, helping to moisturize it by reducing water loss and providing the skin with softness and coverage—without feeling heavy.

WHO SHOULD USE DIMETHICONE 5?

Gentle and non-comedogenic (when applied to clean skin), Dimethicone 5 is an effective moisturizing ingredient for all skin types.
As a skin protectant at certain levels, Dimethicone 5 is especially useful for those whose skin needs an additional barrier that helps prevent moisture from escaping.
Dry, itchy and rough skin may benefit from skincare products that contain Dimethicone 5.

Dimethicone 5 is a form of silicone used to give products lubricity, slip, and good feel.
Dimethicone 5 can also serve as a formulation defoamer and help reduce the feeling of greasiness that some creams leave on the skin immediately upon application.
In addition, Dimethicone 5 is reported to protect the skin against moisture loss when used in larger quantities.
Dimethicone 5 improves product flow and spreadability.
In combination with other ingredients, Dimethicone 5 becomes a good waterproofing material for sunscreen emulsions, and helps reduce the greasiness often seen in high-SPF preparations.

Indications
Dimethicone 5 ointments are excellent water-protective agents because they have an extremely low surface tension and penetrate crevices in the skin to form a plastic-like barrier.
Further, they are nontoxic, inert, stable, and water repellent.
As such, they are useful as barrier creams in industry or wherever constant or frequent exposure to aqueous compounds is a problem.
They will not, however, protect well against solvents, oils, or dusts.

Pharmaceutical Applications
