Description

Diisononyl phthalate (DINP) is by far one of the most used phthalate plasticizers in the world. DINP is a mixture of homologues and isomers from C8 to 10, where the predominant product is with a C9 carbon chain.

Production method

DINP is obtained by esterification of phthalic anhydride with isononyl alcohol in a closed system. The required reaction rate is achieved by maintaining the temperature at 140–150C ° and introducing catalysts. After the reaction, excess isononyl alcohol is removed from the volume, the product is neutralized, washed with water, dried and then filtered.

Application

Diisononyl phthalate has a very wide application, and products obtained with the use of DINP can be used both outdoors and indoors. About 95% of DINP is used for the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) products, which are used in the construction industry: floor coverings, vinyl wallpaper, mastics, insulation and roofing materials, the automotive sector. Also, diisononyl phthalate is used in the production of cable sheaths, films, packaging, footwear, medical products and toys for children. The remaining 5% of DINP is used for the production of synthetic rubbers, as well as for the manufacture of adhesives, gemetics, paintwork materials and lubricants.
