Dipropylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether Acetate

Dipropylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether Acetate

Di(propylene glycol) methyl ether acetate (DPMA, 3-(3-methoxypropoxy)propyl acetate) is extensively employed as a solvent in coatings and silkscreening inks. It is also used as a cleaning agent. In vivo, DPMA rapidly hydrolyzes to dipropylene glycol methyl ether (DPM), thus, the in vivo effects of DPMA are expected to be the same as those of DPM.

DPMA is a propylene oxide-based, or P-series, glycol ether acetate. DPMA is an organic chemicalcompound that contains an ester functional group comprised of two alkyl groups connected by a carbonyl and a linking oxygen atom (RCOOR’) and two ether functional groups--an oxygen atom connected twoalkyl groups (R-O-R’). DPMA is commercially produced as a mixture of four isomeric components in which the internal ether linkage may be adjacent to either a primary or secondary carbon atom. Shorterchain ethers and esters, such as DPMA, are liquids capable of dissolving other substances and typically function as solvents. DPMA is a colorless, water-soluble, sweet-smelling liquid with a moderateevaporation rate, and it is miscible with organic solvents. These properties make DPMA useful as a solvent, fragrance, film-forming agent, and coalescing agent in a variety of applications and productsectors.

According to CDR, DPMA is manufactured domestically and imported. It is used in processing (incorporation into formulation, mixture or reaction) for printing ink manufacturing, cleaning compound and toilet preparation manufacturing, and paint and coating manufacturing; it is also used as a reactant in wholesale and retail trade, and paint and coating manufacturing. Examples of industrial, commercial, and consumer uses include ink, toner, and colorant products, paints and coatings, and lubricants and greases. Based on the known manufacturing, processing, and uses of this chemical substance, EPA assumes distribution in commerce.

Dipropylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether Acetate, PPG-3 methyl ether, and Dipropylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether Acetate  are used in cosmetics as fragrance ingredients and/or solvents at concentrations of 0.4% to 2%. Propylene glycol ethers are rapidly absorbed and distributed throughout the body when introduced by inhalation or oral exposure, but the inhalation toxicity of Dipropylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether Acetate vapor, for example, is low. Aerosols, such as found with hair sprays, produce particle sizes that are not respirable. Because these ingredients are highly water-soluble, they are likely to be absorbed through the human skin only at slow rates, resulting in low blood concentrations and rapid removal by the kidney. These ingredients are not genotoxic and are not reproductive or developmental toxicants. Overall the data are sufficient to conclude that Dipropylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether Acetate, PPG-3 methyl ether, and Dipropylene Glycol Monomethyl Ether Acetate  are safe as used in cosmetics.
