What Is Dispex AA 4140?
Dispex AA 4140, also called polyacrylic acid or acryalate copolymer, is a dry white or light gray powder or liquid that is a sodium salt of polyacrylic acid.

How Dispex AA 4140 Is Made?
Dispex AA 4140 is produced by polymerizing acrylic acid and hydrolysis of the polyacrylic acid with an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution.

Dispex AA 4140 is a polymer, a substance that has a molecular structure built up generally from a large number of similar units bonded together. So functionally, they are strong and flexible, helping to create solid products with a supple texture.
Dispex AA 4140 is a large compound unable to penetrate the skin’s barrier and has been proven to be safe for cosmetic use.

Dispex AA 4140 is not considered to be a plastic. Not all polymers are plastics. The family of polymers is a large one and includes materials other than plastics and resins.
Dispex AA 4140 is more often categorised as a superabsorbent material, it can absorb many times its own weight of water and hold it in creating a soft stable gel.
Dispex AA 4140 is also a film-former: Dispex AA 4140 creates a thin flexible film that gives a smooth feeling on the skin after it has been washed and can also be used in exfoliating products to make strong scrubbing materials more gentle.

Dispex AA 4140 is an odorless, grainy white powder.
Dispex AA 4140 is most impressive property is its ability to absorb large amounts of fluid, up to 800 times its volume of distilled water and lesser amounts of other liquid mixtures.
This property accounts for one of its primary applications, in the manufacture of disposable diapers. Diapers made from sodium polyacrylate are able to absorb up to 30 grams of urine for each gram of diaper.

HOW IT IS MADE
Dispex AA 4140 is produced by the reaction between acrylic acid (H2C=CHCOOH) and its sodium salt (H2C=CHCOONa).
The product of this reaction is a long-chain copolymer consisting of alternate units of acrylic acid and Dispex AA 4140. A copolymer is a polymer made of two different monomers, in this case, acrylic acid and sodium acrylate. What makes this polymer different from most other kinds of polymers is that adjacent polymer chains are able to cross link with each other.

The hydrogen on a carboxyl group (-COOH) on one chain reacts with a double bond (-C=C-) on an adjacent chain, forming a link that holds the two chains together. Cross-linking occurs at many points in the polymer, resulting in the formation of a mesh-like web consisting of polymer chains.

When water is added to the polymer, it forces carboxyl groups away from each other, forcing the mesh to open up and make space for water molecules to fill the gaps in the polymer. As more water is added, the carboxyl groups stretch even farther apart, making room in turn for yet more water molecules to be absorbed by the polymer.
If the polymer is allowed to dry out, water molecules leave gaps in the compound, the empty spaces between carboxyl groups collapse, and the polymer returns to its original size. It can then be stored and re-used any number of times.

Dispex AA 4140 is also used as a thickening agent in medical gels used to treat bed sores, which are open wounds that develop when a person is bed-ridden for too long.
Dispex AA 4140 is also added to detergents and to potting soils to help retain water.
Dispex AA 4140 is now being used in some parts of the world where there is insufficient rain to allow crops or lawns to grow.
Dispex AA 4140 absorbs moisture when rain does fall and holds it in place until plants can absorb the water.

In industry, Dispex AA 4140 is used in filtration units that remove water from airplane and automotive fuel.
Dispex AA 4140 is also used as a thickening agent in coatings and adhesives used in the upholstery, drapery, carpet, paper, paint, wallpaper, printing, and textile industries.
The compound is also used to thicken certain liquid products applied by spraying, such as cleaning products.
Finally,Dispex AA 4140 is sometimes used to prevent fluid loss in oil wells.

Dispex AA 4140 is a mild irritant to the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract.
Dispex AA 4140 may cause redness, itching, and pain on the skin or in the eyes; and coughing, shortness of breath, and inflammation of the respiratory tract.
Questions have been raised about possible health effects on babies who wear disposable diapers containing sodium polyacrylate.
Some people suggest that a baby's tender skin may be more sensitive to the irritation caused by sodium polyacrylate than the skin of an adult.

What Is Dispex AA 4140?
Dispex AA 4140 is a synthetic polymer used in cosmetics and skincare products.
Dispex AA 4140 is used to improve the sensory feel and stability of products.
Dispex AA 4140  functions as a thickening agent, texture enhancer, film-forming agent, and emulsion stabilizer.

Dispex AA 4140, also known as waterlock, is the sodium salt of polyacrylic acid, a high molecular weight polymer. A polymer is a substance which has a molecular structure built up from a large number of similar units, called monomers, bonded together.
With Dispex AA 4140, the monomers are acrylic acid. Functionally, this structure is strong and flexible.
In its dry form, sodium polyacrylate exists as a white, fluffy powder. When it is added to water, however, Dispex AA 4140 turns into a gel-like substance, absorbing many times its weight in water. This is why sodium polyacrylate is considered a “super absorbent polymer”.
