Diutan Gum
Diutan gum is a polysaccharide used for applications that require very high suspending characteristics such as Enhanced Oil Recovery EOR  and oilfield drilling fluids.

Diutan Gum is a high molecular weight biopolymer of Xanthan Gum. Xanthan gum is commonly used in drilling fluids to provide viscosity, solid suspension, and fluid-loss control. However, Diutan gum is sensitive to high temperatures and not tolerant of field contaminants. Diutan gum offers the same functions but overcomes the deficiencies of xanthan gum.

Diutan Gum is used mainly used to adjust the viscosity of freshwater, seawater, or saline muds.
Diutan gum also provides a measure of filtration control.

Diutan Gums tertiary structure is a double-helix.
Diutan gum is closer to that of welan gum than that of xanthan gum. However, there are significant differences.
Diutan Gum has an average molecular weight of 5×106, which is much higher than those of welan and xanthan. This is why the length of the diutan molecule is larger than that of welan or xanthan.

Diutan gum is a bio-fermented polymer produced by an isolated naturally-occurring bacterial strain of the Sphingomonas genus.
Diutan gum is an anionic extracellular polysaccharide. Vicious aqueous Diutan gum solutions show a strong ability of water retention capacity, salt tolerance, suspending power, and thermal stability ranging from 5 to 150 °C.
Diutan gum is stable across a wide pH range and can be used in weighted and unweighted drilling fluids, completion fluids, and other systems.

Diutan Gum is designed to provide viscosity on various depth wells where value and performance levels are critical.

Preparation & Procedures
Diutan Gum disperses in water with moderate agitation. Continued mixing provides a smooth viscous fluid.
Diutan gum should be added slowly to the active system to achieve to reduce the chances of lumping.

Those working with Diutan Gum should wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment, including dust masks and eye protection.
Diutan gum is advisable to wear PPE  while mixing products.

Diutan Gum is a naturally derived, readily biodegradable, efficient rheology modifier with thickening and suspending capabilities that can impart protection and repair benefits to hair fibers even at low use levels and boosted with added salt.
Diutan Gum also has film forming capabilities with excellent conditioning benefits that give a nice, silky sensory experience to the hair with no drag or stickiness.

Suitable for conditioners, treatments and hair color, Diutan Gum works in a wide range of pH and temperatures. In addition, in formulations it is easy to disperse and cold processable.
Diutan Gum is also high efficiencydue to high pseudoplasticity with greater low shear rate viscosity (and yield).

Diutan gum is a polysaccharide which is used for the stabilisation of emulsions, foams and suspensions.
Diutan gum is obtained by fermentation and its chemical structure is similar to xanthan gum.

Compared with xanthan gum, it is characterised by an even stronger pseudoplasticity. Already at very low use levels, high viscosities and good flow properties under shear as pumping or pouring can be achieved. Another outstanding feature is its excellent alkali resistance.

Applications

Diutan gum Physical requirements:
Appearance:        cream colored powder
Loss on drying :        15% max
pH:        6.0-8.0

Diutan gum is composed by six sugar units of d-glucose, d-glucuronic acid, d-glucose (with 2 l-rhamnose in the side chain) and l-rhamnoses, forming a linear backbone with a repeating side chain.
Diutan gum has high molecular weight (typically millions of kD) and thus long molecular chain length.
This leads to diutan gum polymer chain entanglement at relatively low concentrations in solution. The structured network of entangled, outstanding stiff molecules creates high viscosity at low shear rates, resulting in suspension properties.
The molecules in the complex network of a diutan gum solution are weakly associated. This network is progressively disrupted under the influence of applied shear stress making diutan gum solutions highly pseudoplastic.
Extract Diutan gum a robust candidate as a thickener and stabilizing agent in challenging formulations such as low or high pH, high ion cosmetic contents or natural formulations.
